행정안전부와 국토교통부가 후원하고 조선일보가 주최한 이번 ‘2024 콤팩트시티 대상’은 기존 택지개발의 한계를 극복하고 도시의 인구 감소, 도심공동화(空同化), 지역 간 불균형을 해소하기 위한 콤팩트시티의 다양한 사례와 아이디어를 공유하는데 목적을 두고 있다.
김포시가 수상한 부문은 균형발전 부문으로, 김포시는 김포한강2콤팩트시티의 개발전략 응모를 통해 최우수상을 수상하게 됐다. 김포시의 응모 내용은 경제·인프라·일자리와 자족기능이 부족한 김포를 ‘김포한강2 콤팩트시티 조성’을 통해 자족도시로 도약하며, 균형발전을 도모한다는게 주요골자다.

김포한강2콤팩트시티는 2기신도시인 한강신도시에서 제외되었던 양촌읍, 마산동, 장기동, 운양동 일부에 면적 731만㎡(221만평), 인구계획 4만 6천호(10만 3천명)로 조성될 계획이며, '26년 지구계획 승인, '30년 최초 분양, ‘33년 사업준공을 목표로 하고 있다.
