【브레이크뉴스 경주】박희경 기자=한국원자력환경공단(이사장 조성돈, 이하 공단)은 지난 15일 대한상공회의소에서 열린 세계 표준의 날 기념식에서 지하수 분야 국가표준 제정과 국제표준화 활동을 통해 방사성폐기물 안전관리의 신뢰도를 높인 공로를 인정받아 산업통상자원부 장관 표창을 수상했다고 16일 밝혔다.

공단은 2023년부터 국립환경과학원의 지하수 분야 표준협력기관으로 지정돼 지금까지 총 6건의 국제기준에 맞는 국가표준 제정을 주도했다. 또한, 산학연 전문가가 참여하는 지하수 표준 기술위원회를 구성해 신규 국가표준 및 국제표준 개발에 적극 나서고 있다.
공단은 지하수 분야 표준화 활동이 방사성폐기물 안전관리에 대한 국민 신뢰도를 높이고, 국내 지하수 관리 정책 수립 및 제도 개선에 기여할 것으로 기대하고 있다.
한편 국제표준은 글로벌 시장의 기술 호환성과 품질 보증을 위해 국제표준화기구(ISO)에서 제정하는 세계적으로 통용되는 기준이다. 또한 국가표준은 각 국가의 특수성을 반영해 제정되는 기준으로, 한국은 한국산업표준(KS)이 이에 해당한다. 두 표준의 조화는 국내 산업의 국제 경쟁력 강화에 핵심적인 역할을 한다.
조성돈 한국원자력환경공단 이사장은 “공단이 방폐물 처분사업에서 축적해 온 지하수 분야 기술력을 대내외적으로 인정받은 성과”라며 “지하수분야 전문성 강화와 인재 양성을 통해 국내외 표준화를 선도하겠다”고 밝혔다.

Korea Radioactive Waste Management Corporation Receives Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award for Establishing National Standards in Groundwater Field
Korea Radioactive Waste Management Corporation (Chairman Seong-don Cho, hereinafter referred to as the Corporation) announced on the 16th that it received the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award for its contribution to enhancing the reliability of radioactive waste safety management through establishing national standards in the groundwater field and international standardization activities at the World Standards Day ceremony held at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the 15th.
Since 2023, the Corporation has been designated as a standard cooperation organization for the groundwater field of the National Institute of Environmental Research and has led the establishment of a total of six national standards that meet international standards. In addition, it has formed a groundwater standard technology committee with experts from academia, industry and research to actively develop new national and international standards.
The Corporation expects that groundwater standardization activities will increase public confidence in the safety management of radioactive waste and contribute to the establishment of domestic groundwater management policies and institutional improvements.
Meanwhile, international standards are globally accepted standards established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to ensure technical compatibility and quality assurance in the global market. In addition, national standards are standards established to reflect the unique characteristics of each country, and Korea’s Korean Industrial Standards (KS) are equivalent to this. Harmonization of the two standards plays a key role in strengthening the international competitiveness of domestic industries.
Cho Seong-don, Chairman of the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency, said, “This is a result of the Agency’s groundwater technology accumulated through radioactive waste disposal projects being recognized domestically and internationally,” and added, “We will lead domestic and international standardization by strengthening groundwater expertise and fostering talent.”
