나는 지난 30년 간 언론사의 사주(오너=社主)로 일했습니다. 1997년 4월에 '(주)펜 그리고 자유' 라는 이름의 회사를 설립, 올해 4월로 30년째 운영을 해왔습니다. 나는 있는 그대로, 나의 출신 신분을 이야기 하면, 촌놈-촌사람 출신입니다. 가문도, 학교도, 친구도 그렇고 그렇습니다. 그 어디에? 그 누구에게? 한 푼(단돈 1원의 의미)이라도 꿈질(빌리는 일)할 수 있는 곳이 없었습니다. 이런 상황에서, 신문사를 지난 30년 간 경영해왔습니다. 그리하여, 살아남았습니다. 뒤 돌아보면, 눈물 나는 기간이었습니다. 이는 기적(奇蹟)이라고 생각합니다.
이 기적은 누가 주었을까요? 대한민국, 나를 낳아준 나라라고 생각합니다. 대한민국은 군사 독재를 극복하고, 민주주의 국가를 이룩해냈습니다. 그리하여 글로벌 10대 경제대국에 진입했습니다. 구멍가게 30년째, 그러하더라도, 생존하기가 어려운 사회 환경이었습니다. 그러함에도 내 회사는 30년을 살아남았습니다. 난, 처절하게, 지독한 놈 입니다~

나는 주간신문('주간현대=1997년 창간'-'사건의 내막=1998년 창간')-인터넷 신문('브레이크뉴스=2003년 창간')이라는 언론사 사주로서, 30년째 회사를 경영해오면서 가장 자랑스러워할 일이 하나? 내세울 게 하나가 있다고요? 그, 자랑거리를 공개리 자랑하고 싶습니다. 나는 30년 간 회사를 경영해 오면서, 월급-퇴직금-거래처 지급 비용을 단 1초라도 넘겨 본 일이 없었습니다.
어차피 지급해야할 돈이었지만, 지급 약속을 어기지 않았습니다. 단 1초도, 지급(支給) 약속을 어긴 일이 없었습니다. 이게, 내가 나를 가장 자랑스럽게 생각하는 일입니다. 이와 관련된 칼럼을 쓸 수 있어, 행운(幸運)이기도 합니다.
그뿐 아니라, 언론사를 이끌어 오면서 대한민국 사회의 뉴스-정보를 축적, 소프트 파워(Soft Power) 키우기에 기여했다고 자부합니다. 소프트 파워는 21세기에 꼭 필요한 사회적인 동력(動力)이라고 생각합니다. 언론(言論)이란? 한 국가나 사회의 매력과 신뢰도를 상징하는 소프트 파워를 키우는 핵심 엔진일 수 있습니다. 단순히 정보를 전달하는 것을 넘어, 사회적 가치를 형성하고 대외적 이미지를 구축하는 데 결정적인 역할을 하기 때문입니다. 언론이 사회 발전에 필요한 소프트파워 신장에 기여할 수 있다는 것은, 소프트파워의 근간은 '신뢰'이기 때문입니다.
뿐만 아니라 언론이란, 정확하고 객관적인 보도로 사회 내 불신을 해소합니다. 다양한 이해관계를 대변하고 토론의 장을 만들어 사회적 합의를 이끕니다. 권력에 대한 비판과 감시를 통해 투명한 사회 시스템을 유지합니다. 한 국가의 문화적 매력은 언론의 콘텐츠를 통해 세계로 뻗어 나갑니다. 한국 고유의 문화, 예술, 라이프스타일을 발굴해 글로벌 콘텐츠로 재생산합니다. 민주주의, 인권, 환경 보호 등 인류 보편적 가치를 실천하는 한국의 모습을 대외에 알립니다. 전문적인 심층 보도를 통해 대중의 민주 시민 의식과 지식수준을 높여 줍니다.

언론이란, 국제 사회에서 한국의 목소리를 키우는 역할을 합니다. 기후 위기, AI 윤리 등 국제적 현안에 대해 한국적 시각이 담긴 대안을 제시합니다. 전 세계 독자들과 직접 소통하며 한국에 대한 오해를 바로잡고 긍정적인 여론을 형성합니다. 정부 주도의 외교를 넘어, 언론이 민간 차원의 신뢰를 쌓는 가교 역할을 수행합니다.
필자는 언론을 통해 미래 사회의 방향성을 제시하여 국가의 질적 성장을 도왔다고 생각하고 있습니다. 특히 소수자 또는 숨어 있는 비주류의 목소리를 반영하여 포용적인 사회 문화를 조성해왔습니다. 과거, 30년에 걸친 이런 생활을 자랑스럽게 생각합니다, 아니, 정말로 자랑스럽습니다!
이런 결과를 두고, 세상에선 "논두렁 정기(精氣)라도 가지고 태어나야 한다"고 말합니다. 어릴 적, 나는 날마다 논두렁을 밟으면서 살았습니다. 그러니 나의 발바닥에 논두렁 정기가 붙어 있었는지? 모를 일입니다. 나에겐, 항상-늘 논두렁 정기가 함께 했었습니다. 지금, 내가 나에게 상(賞)을 주고 싶습니다. “문일석 발행인, 그 동안 수고 많이 했으니 상을 드립니다. 논두렁 정기(精氣) 상을 받으시오!....문일석 드림...하하하” 이 큰 상을, 내가 나에게 이런 큰 상을 주다니, 이런 일이?...하하하... moonilsuk@naver.com

I have worked as the owner of a media company for the past 30 years. I established a company named "Pen and Freedom Co., Ltd." in April 1997, and as of this April, I have been operating it for 30 years.
To be honest about my background, I am a country bumpkin. My family, my school, and my friends are all the same.
Where? To whom? There was nowhere I could borrow even a single penny (meaning just one won).
In these circumstances, I have managed the newspaper for the past 30 years. And so, I survived. Looking back, it was a tearful period. I consider this a miracle.
Who gave me this miracle? I believe it is the Republic of Korea, the country that gave birth to me. The Republic of Korea overcame military dictatorship and established itself as a democratic nation. Consequently, it has entered the ranks of the top 10 global economic powers.
It has been 30 years since I started a small corner store, yet the social environment was difficult to survive in. Despite this, my company has survived for 30 years. I am a desperate, tenacious guy.
As the owner of media outlets—a weekly newspaper ('Weekly Hyundai' - 'Inside Story') and an online newspaper ('Break News')—I have managed these companies for 30 years. Is there one thing I am most proud of? Is there one thing I can boast about? I would like to publicly boast about that very thing. Throughout my 30 years of managing these companies, I have never missed a single second of paying salaries, severance pay, or expenses to clients. Even though these were funds that had to be paid anyway, I never broke my promise to pay. I have never broken a payment promise for even a single second. This is what I am most proud of. It is also a stroke of luck to be able to write a column related to this.
Furthermore, while leading this media organization, I take pride in having contributed to the cultivation of soft power by accumulating news and information for Korean society. I believe soft power is an essential social driving force for the 21st century. What is the press? It can be the core engine for fostering soft power, which symbolizes the attractiveness and credibility of a nation or society. This is because it plays a decisive role in shaping social values and building an external image, going beyond simply conveying information. The fact that the press can contribute to the growth of soft power necessary for social development is that the foundation of soft power is 'trust.'
Moreover, the press resolves distrust within society through accurate and objective reporting. It represents diverse interests and creates a forum for discussion to drive social consensus. It maintains a transparent social system through criticism and oversight of power. A nation's cultural appeal spreads to the world through media content. It discovers Korea's unique culture, arts, and lifestyle and reproduces them as global content. It promotes to the outside world Korea's commitment to practicing universal human values such as democracy, human rights, and environmental protection. Through professional, in-depth reporting, it elevates the public's democratic civic consciousness and level of knowledge.
The media plays a role in amplifying Korea's voice in the international community. It presents alternatives infused with a Korean perspective on global issues such as the climate crisis and AI ethics. By communicating directly with readers worldwide, it corrects misunderstandings about Korea and fosters positive public opinion. Beyond government-led diplomacy, the media acts as a bridge to build trust at the private level.
I believe that through the media, I have contributed to the qualitative growth of the nation by presenting a direction for future society. In particular, it fosters an inclusive social culture by reflecting the voices of minorities or the hidden non-mainstream. I am proud of this lifestyle spanning the past 30 years—no, I am truly proud!
Regarding these results, people say, "You must be born with the spirit of the rice paddies." When I was young, I lived every day treading on the rice paddy ridges. So, perhaps the spirit of the ridges clung to the soles of my feet? I have no idea. But the spirit of the ridges has always—always—been with me. Now, I would like to give myself an award. “Publisher Moon Il-suk, you have worked so hard, so I present you with an award. Please accept the Award of the Spirit of the Rice Paddy!... Sincerely, Moon Il-suk... Hahaha.” To think that I am giving myself such a great award—what a coincidence!... Hahaha..
