[브레이크뉴스=배종태 기자] 기후 위기 대응과 인공지능(AI) 확산에 따른 급격한 전력 수요 증가에 대비하여 원자력의 전략적 해법을 모색하는 국내외 원자력계 최대 행사 ‘2026 한국 원자력 연차대회’가 22일 부산 벡스코 제1 전시장에서 개막해 오는 24일까지 개최된다.
올해로 41회를 맞이한 이번 연차대회는 한국원자력산업협회가 주최하고 과기정통부, 기후에너지환경부, 산업통상자원부가 후원한다. 특히 올해는 태평양 연안 10개국이 참여하는 ‘태평양연안국 원자력 학술회의(PBNC)’를 14년 만에 국내에 유치하며 예년보다 더욱 풍성한 국제 교류의 장이 마련되었다.
이번 행사는 기후 위기와 탄소중립이라는 국제적 과제와 함께 인공지능 확산으로 급증하는 전력 수요에 대응하기 위한 원자력의 전략적 역할을 조명하고자 ‘인공지능 시대를 여는 원자력(Nuclear Energy for an AI-powered World)’을 주제로 진행되며, 기간중 국내․외 원자력 전문가등 1만 9천여 명이 참여할 예정이다
전시 개막부터 기조강연까지...열기 가득했던 개막식 현장
연차대회 기간 중 부산시와 공동으로 주최하는‘2026 부산 국제원자력 산업전’이 함께 개최된다. 역대 최대 규모로 열리는 이번 전시에는 한국수력원자력을 비롯해 한전KPS, 두산에너빌리티, 한국원자력연구원 등 국내 주요 기업.기관들과 미국 웨스팅하우스(Westinghouse), 프랑스 오라노(Orano), 프라마톰(Framatome), 캐나다 앳킨스리알리스(AtkinsRealis) 등 해외 기업 포함 총 19개국 155개 기관에서 전시관(전시 부스) 운영을 통해 보유 기술과 제품을 홍보하였으며, 특히 한국 원전을 도입하는 체코에서는 국가관을 운영하기도 했다.

행사 첫날인 22일 오후 1시, ‘2026 부산 국제원자력 산업전’의 개막식으로 공식 일정이 시작되었다. 개막식은 주요 내빈 소개를 시작으로 대회의 성공적인 개최를 기원하는 테이프 커팅식과 기념 촬영 순으로 진행되었다. 이어 참석자들은 역대 최대 규모로 마련된 420개 전시 부스를 관람하며 한국수력원자력과 웨스팅하우스 등 글로벌 기업들이 선보인 원전 설계, 건설, 안전 분야의 첨단 기술력을 확인했다.
이어서 오후 1시 45분부터는 PBNC와 연계된 통합 개회식이 진행됐다. 김회천 한국원자력산업협회 회장(한국수력원자력 사장)과 하재주 태평양원자력협의회(PNC) 회장의 개회사를 시작으로, 김성수 과기정통부 연구개발정책실장과 기후부 국장은 축사를 통해 탄소중립 시대 원자력의 중요성을 강조했다. 박형준 부산시장은 환영사를 통해 "이번 전시회가 SMR 등 원자력산업의 최신 트렌드를 공유하고 기업들에게 실질적인 비즈니스 기회를 제공할 것"이라며 "원자력산업 육성을 위해 제작지원센터 준공 등 정책적 지원을 아끼지 않겠다"고 강조했다.
이외에도 주한규 한국원자력연구원장, 정창진 한전원자력연료 사장, 권병훈 원자력환경복원연구원장 등 국내 주요 기관장들이 참석했다. 특히 한국 원전 도입의 핵심 파트너인 체코에서는 이반 얀차렉 주한 체코대사와 토마쉬 에흘레르 산업통상부 실장이 참석했다.

기술 유공자 포상 및 차세대 원자력 비전 제시
이어 진행된 표창 시상식에서는 원자력 산업 발전에 기여한 산·학·연 전문가들에 대한 격려가 이어졌다. 과기정통부는 원자력 기술 유공(12점)과 국제협력 유공(7점) 부문에서 총 19점의 장관 표창을 수여했다. 기후에너지환경부(10점)와 산업통상자원부(5점) 또한 원자력 산업 발전 및 생태계 활성화 유공자들에게 표창을 전달하며 감사의 뜻을 전했다.
아울러, 이번 대회의 하이라이트인 기조강연이 50분간 이어졌다. 첫 번째 강연자로 나선 체코 산업통상부의 토마쉬 에흘레르 실장은 한국 원전 도입을 통한 체코의 에너지 전략과 양국 협력 방안을 구체적으로 설명했다. 이어 미국 페르미 뉴클리어사의 메수트 우즈만 사장은 현재 추진 중인 11GW 규모의 대규모 원전 프로젝트 사례를 공유하며, AI 시대를 뒷받침할 안정적 에너지원으로서 원자력이 나아갈 방향을 역설했다.
김성수 과기정통부 연구개발정책실장은 축사를 통해 “최근 제정된 소형모듈원자로(SMR) 특별법 시행에 발맞춰 SMR 범부처 컨트롤타워를 구축하고 기본계획 수립과 민·관 합작 R&D 실증 지원을 강화할 것”이라고 밝혔다. 이어 “과기정통부는 원자력 전주기 기술혁신과 차세대 원자력 시스템 개발을 통해 대한민국이 글로벌 원자력 시장의 새로운 성장동력을 창출할 수 있도록 모든 지원을 아끼지 않겠다”고 강조했다.

이번 행사는 24일까지 이어지며 태평양 원자력 협의회(PNC) 회원국들이 참여하는 학술 연구논문 발표와 정책 논의가 계속된다. 또한 기자재 구매상담회, 수출상담회, 체코 원전 사업 설명회 등 국내 기업들의 해외 진출을 돕는 실질적인 비즈니스 프로그램도 활발히 운영될 예정이다.

The Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference returns to Korea after 14 years alongside the largest industry exhibition to date
The 2026 Korea Nuclear Annual Conference, the country’s largest gathering of nuclear industry stakeholders, opened on April 22 at BEXCO Exhibition Hall 1 in Busan and will run through April 24. The event focuses on exploring strategic solutions for nuclear energy in response to the climate crisis and rapidly growing electricity demand driven by the expansion of artificial intelligence.
Now in its 41st year, the conference is hosted by the Korea Nuclear Industry Association and supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. This year’s event is particularly notable for hosting the Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference, bringing together participants from ten Pacific Rim countries and returning to Korea for the first time in 14 years, further expanding opportunities for international exchange.
Under the theme Nuclear Energy for an AI powered World, the conference highlights the strategic role of nuclear power in addressing global challenges such as carbon neutrality and surging power demand linked to AI technologies. Around 19000 nuclear experts and industry participants from Korea and abroad are expected to attend.
Opening ceremony highlights strong industry momentum
Held in conjunction with the conference, the 2026 Busan International Nuclear Industry Exhibition opened as a joint event with the city of Busan. The exhibition marks the largest edition to date, featuring 155 organizations from 19 countries. Participants include major domestic players such as Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power, KEPCO KPS, Doosan Enerbility, and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, as well as global companies including Westinghouse from the United States, Orano and Framatome from France, and AtkinsRealis from Canada. The Czech Republic, a key partner in adopting Korean nuclear technology, also operates a national pavilion.
The official program began at 1 pm on April 22 with the exhibition’s opening ceremony. The event featured introductions of key guests, a ribbon cutting ceremony, and a commemorative photo session. Attendees then toured the exhibition floor, which includes 420 booths showcasing advanced technologies in nuclear design, construction, and safety from leading global companies.
At 1 45 pm, a joint opening ceremony linked with the Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference followed. Opening remarks were delivered by Kim Hoecheon, Chairman of the Korea Nuclear Industry Association, and Ha Jaejoo, Chairman of the Pacific Nuclear Council. Congratulatory speeches by Kim Sungsoo, Director General for R and D Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, and a senior official from the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment emphasized the importance of nuclear energy in achieving carbon neutrality.
Busan Mayor Park Heongjoon welcomed participants, stating that the exhibition would provide a platform to share the latest trends such as small modular reactors and offer meaningful business opportunities for companies. He also reaffirmed Busan’s commitment to supporting the nuclear industry through policy initiatives, including the completion of a nuclear manufacturing support center, and expressed the city’s ambition to become a global hub for the nuclear sector.
The event was attended by key figures from major institutions, including Joo Hankyu, President of the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, Jung Changjin, CEO of KEPCO Nuclear Fuel, and Kwon Byunghoon, President of the Nuclear Environmental Restoration Institute. From the Czech Republic, Ambassador Ivan Jancarek and Tomas Ehler, Director General at the Ministry of Industry and Trade, were also present, reflecting the importance of bilateral cooperation.
Awards and future vision for nuclear energy
An awards ceremony recognized contributions to the development of the nuclear industry across academia, research, and industry. The Ministry of Science and ICT presented a total of 19 ministerial awards, including 12 for technological achievement and 7 for international cooperation. The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy also honored individuals for their contributions to industry development and ecosystem growth.
The conference’s keynote sessions followed, featuring two major presentations. Tomas Ehler outlined the Czech Republic’s energy strategy based on the adoption of Korean nuclear technology and discussed avenues for bilateral cooperation. Mesut Uzman, CEO of Fermi Nuclear in the United States, introduced a large scale 11 gigawatt nuclear project currently underway and emphasized the role of nuclear energy as a stable power source for the AI era.
In his remarks, Kim Sungsoo highlighted the government’s plans to establish a cross ministerial control tower for small modular reactors in line with the recently enacted SMR special act. He also noted that efforts would be strengthened to develop a comprehensive national plan and support public private joint research, development, and demonstration projects. He added that the government will continue to support full cycle nuclear innovation and next generation reactor systems to position Korea as a leading force in the global nuclear market.
The conference will continue through April 24, featuring academic presentations and policy discussions among member countries of the Pacific Nuclear Council. Business programs such as procurement consultations, export meetings, and a briefing session on the Czech nuclear project will also be held to support Korean companies in expanding overseas.
