The Office of the President announced on the 27th that it will hold an emergency response meeting in response to President-elect Trump's announcement of a "tariff bomb."
According to the Office of the President, an emergency economic and security review meeting on the new US administration's trade and tariff policies will be held at 3 p.m. that day, chaired by Policy Director Sung Tae-yoon, to examine the impact of the tariff bomb announced by President-elect Trump on the real economy, including Korean companies and trade, and discuss countermeasures.
The meeting is expected to be attended by high-ranking officials from relevant ministries in charge of the real economy, including the Office of the President's staff, the Vice Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the Director of the Trade Negotiation Headquarters, to examine trends related to the new US administration's punitive taxation policy and discuss future countermeasures.
Earlier, on the 25th (local time), President-elect Trump announced on the SNS 'TrueSocial' that "on the day of inauguration, January 20th of next year, I will impose an additional 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada and an additional 10% tariff on China."
Amid the threat of a tariff bomb targeting countries with a trade deficit under the pretext of responding to the problems of drug inflow and illegal immigration, exports to the U.S., Korea's largest export market, are expected to take a hit.
