충남 서산시는 세계적인 철새도래지인 천수만에 도래하는 야생조류의 종과 개체수가 꾸준히 증가하고 있다고 8일 밝혔다.
개체수 증가는 지난 2007년부터 지역 주민을 통해 지속적으로 실시해온 야생조류 모니터링의 결과로, 서산시는 천수만의 생태계를 보호하고 관리하기 위해 힘쓰고 있다.
서산 천수만에서 2015년부터 2024년까지 관찰된 야생조류는 총 303종으로, 이는 한반도에서 기록된 조류 545종의 55.6%에 해당한다.
특히 지난해에는 223종의 야생조류가 확인되어, 지난 10년간 가장 많은 종류의 조류가 관찰된 것으로 나타났다.
개체수 또한 눈에 띄는 증가세를 보였다.
2017년에는 26만여 마리의 이례적인 개체수가 기록되었으며, 지난해에는 23만 7천여 마리의 조류가 관찰되었다.
