필자는 담양 농업고등학교를 졸업했다. 이때, 식물의 성장촉진제(Plant Growth Regulators, PGRs)가 무언지를 배웠다.
성장 촉진제란 식물의 성장과 발달을 조절하는 화학 물질의 일종이다. 성장촉진제의 성분은 옥신(Auxin), 시토키닌(Cytokinin), 지베렐린(Gibberellin), 에틸렌(Ethylene) 등이다.
이들 성분은 식물의 뿌리, 줄기, 잎 등에서 세포 분열과 신장을 촉진하거나 억제하여 성장 속도를 조절하는 작용을 한다.

논 작물(벼 등)을 재배할 때, 잡초제거를 위해 성장 촉진제를 이용한다. 성장 촉진제를 뿌려, 하루 이틀 사이에 과도한 성장을 유도, 웃자람 현상으로 잡초를 죽이는 방법을 쓴다.
베트남 전쟁 때 사용됐던 고엽제는 일종의 성장 촉진제이다. 고엽제란, 단 기간에 식물을 웃자라게 해, 땅 위의 모든 식물을 고사 시키는 약제이다.
오늘날 발전하고 있는 언론을 바라보면, 과도한 성장촉진제에 노출된 듯한 느낌을 갖게 된다.
한국의 인터넷 매체 수는 1만 1천개. 유튜브는 100만 개를 넘어섰다고 한다. 언론 전문 학자들은 이런 1인 미디어 류(類)들을 인터넷 시대의 미디어 또는 저널리즘(언론)이라는 용어로 부르기 시작했다. 미디어 역할을 하고 있기 때문이다. 이들 인터넷 미디어들이 활동 여파로 공중파, 레거시(기존) 언론의 쇠퇴가 눈에 띄게 나타났다.
필자는 지난 52년 간(1973년부터 현재) 기사-글만을 써왔다. 그런 삶을 살아온 사람으로서 이 시대를 바라보면, 지금의 시대는 다(多)매체-무수한 매체 시대이다. 매체가 매체이기를 원한다면, 매체가 꼭 해야 할 일은 '사실(事實)의 기록'이다. 그러하니, 무수한 매체 시대의 장점은 정보-뉴스의 자유로운 유통이라는 점에서, 무수한 매체에겐 호기능(好機能)이 있다. 그러나 이들 무수한 매체들이 사실 기록이 아닌, 가짜 정보-뉴스를 유통 한다면, 사회에 해악을 끼치는 매체라 할 수 있다. 오늘날의 무수한 매체들은 '사실 기록'이라는 본질을 찾아가는 작업을 게을리 해서는 안 된다.
무수한 언론시대를 연 유튜브의 경우, 가짜 뉴스를 생산하는 온상(溫床) 역할을 하기도 한다. 특히 좌우(左右)로 편향된 유튜버들이 생산한 정보-뉴스들이 우기(雨期)의 강물처럼 범람(氾濫), 매체의 본질을 흐리고 있다.
무수한 인터넷 미디어, 인터넷 저널리즘의 확장을 지켜보면서. 식물에 뿌려지는 과도한 성장촉진제를 묵상(默想)하곤 한다. 식물에 뿌려진 과도한 성장 촉진제는 식물을 짧은 시간에 과도하게 급성장하게 함으로써, 식물을 고사(枯死) 시킨다.

마찬가지로, 성장 촉진제를 맞은 듯 우후죽순(雨後竹筍)처럼 늘어나고 있는 1인 미디어들이 한순간에 없어질지도 모른다는 우려를 해본다.
모든 한 순간에 무성(茂盛)해진 것들은 반드시 쇠(衰)할 때가 오게 된다. 이런 때가 오면, 모든 언론-매체들이 사망(死亡)하는 순간일 수도 있을 것이다. 1인 미디어들의 순기능을 받아들이지만, 필요가 없어질 때 한꺼번에 우르르 문을 닫는 역기능(逆機能)을 우려한다. 언론이 존재하지 않는 사회는 암흑(暗黑)사회이다. moonilsuk@naver.com
