충남 서산시는 문화체육관광부와 한국관광공사가 주관하는 ‘한국관광 100선’에 서산해미읍성이 선정되었다고 21일 밝혔다.
서산해미읍성은 조선 초기에 왜구로부터 백성을 보호하기 위해 축성된 역사적인 유적으로, 조선시대 읍성 중 가장 잘 보존된 평성이다. 성 주변에는 가시가 많은 탱자나무가 심어져 있어 ‘탱자성’으로도 불린다. 이순신 장군이 1579년에 군관으로 10개월간 근무한 이력도 갖고 있다.
현재 서산해미읍성은 넓은 천연 잔디와 소나무 숲길을 갖춘 치유와 휴식의 공간으로, 많은 방문객에게 사랑받고 있다. 서산시는 매주 전통문화 공연, 직거래 장터, 국궁, 연날리기 등 다양한 프로그램을 운영하며 민족의 역사와 문화적 전통을 알리고 있다.
특히 매년 10월에는 서산시의 대표 축제인 ‘서산해미읍성축제’를 개최하여 남녀노소 모두가 즐길 수 있는 역사와 문화가 어우러진 장을 마련한다. 지난해 열린 제21회 서산해미읍성축제에는 27만 명의 관광객이 방문해 다양한 체험과 문화 공연을 즐겼다.
