'1인 월간지'라는 게 있다. 노평구(1912년 1월 16일-2003년 9월 8일. 대전현충원 애국지사 제2묘역에 묻혀있음) 발행인이 발행했던 '성서연구'가 대표적인 '1인 월간지' 였다. 이 잡지는 50여 년 동안, 총 500호가 발행됐다. 노평구 발행인은 다석(多夕) 류영모((1890~1981-柳永模)의 제자였다.
필자는 강남대학 신학과(기독교 문학전공)를 졸업했다. 졸업논문으로 한국의 무교회주의를 다뤘다. 이때, 김교신-류영모의 제자였던, 노평구 발행인을 자주 만나게 됐다. '씨알의 소리' 함석헌(1901~1989)도 류영모의 제자로 분류된다.
'성서조선'은 원래 김교신(金敎臣, 1901년-1945년)이 발행했던 잡지의 제호였다. 그런데 김교신 사후 노평구 발행인이 동일한 제호로 발행했던 '1인 월간잡지' 였다. 그 당시, 월간지에 한 사람의 글을 실어 발행하는 '1인 잡지'도 있었다. 성서조선은 그런 '1인 잡지' 였다.
필자는 한국무교회주의 태두(泰斗)라할 수 있는 김교신을 연구했다. 그러다보니 그의 제자였던 노평구 발행인과 친하게 됐었다. 그를 통해 류영모가 어떤 인물인지도 알게 됐다. 류영모는 비판력을 지닌 인물이었다.
2월3일 오늘은? 류영모 선생이 이 세상에서 몰(歿-1981년 2월3일)한 날이다. 그분의 어록들을 살피면, 간담이 서늘해질 정도로, 매섭고-날카로운 게 많다.
그는 하루에 한 끼, 1식(食)을 했다. 함석헌도 그를 따라 하루에 1식을 했다. 그러하니 무산자(無産者)로 내몰리기도 했다. 아래는 그가 남긴 말이다.
“세상에서 나는 아무것도 가진 게 없는 놈이라 해서 무산자(無産者)라 하는, 이따위 소리를 합니다. 무산자는 세상에 없어요. 왜냐? 몸을 가졌는데, 가진 게 아무것도 없다는 그런 거짓이 어디 있어요? 이 세상에서 코로 숨을 쉬는 사람 중에서 소유가 전혀 없다고 할 사람이 없습니다.”
일본인 기독교 사상가였던 우찌무라 간조의 무교회주의에 심취했던 류영모는 기독교에 대해서 꼬장꼬장 비판적이었다.
아래는 그 비판 글 중의 한 소절이다.
“예수의 이름만으로 구원받는다고 해요. 불교에서도 ‘하늘 위로 가나, 아래로 가나 부처만 한 분이 없다’며 ‘천상천하무여불’을 하루에도 열번 스무번 연거푸 불러요. 세상은 예수의 이름만 팔아먹어요. 다른 이름으로는 구원을 못 얻는다고 합니다. 억만번 예수를 불러보시오. 그렇게 되는가요? 사도신조(신앙 고백문)의 뜻은 하나님의 뜻대로 생명의 온전한 속알이 되는 그 뜻으로 살아야, 예수가 도달한 것같이 하느님 품 안에 들어가고 산다는 겁니다. 이름만 팔지 말고 뜻이 반듯해야 합니다.”
류영모의 독설(毒舌-?) 몇 가지를 더 소개한다.
"나더러 어떤 사람이 '예수를 믿으십니까? 선생님은 기도도 안 하시고 교회에도 안 가시고 찬송도 안 하시지요?'라고 묻는다. 나도 대답하기 쉽게 예수 믿는다고 말하고 싶다. 그러나 사람들이 오늘날 내가 하는 말을 듣고서 저렇게 말하는 사람이 무슨 크리스천이냐고 말할 것이다. 그래서 나는 아예 '나는 크리스천이 아니다. 무종교다'라고 말하는 것이다. 그렇다고 내가 예수를 싫어하는 것이 아니다. 예수는 나의 유일한 스승이다."
"나는 요새 부끄러워서 예수 믿는다고 할 수 없다. 나는 늘 이단이라고 해서 안 믿는다고 하는 것이 차라리 좋지만, 인제는 그나마도 믿는다는 것이 부끄러워졌다. 믿는다면 무슨 외래(外來)의 무당같이 보인다."
"종교는 하느님의 성령을 받아 얼나를 깨달으면 사람들에게 하느님의 증인이 되어야 하거늘, 하느님의 권능이란 미명(美名)을 이용하여 이상한 소리로 부흥을 하려 한다. 그리하여 금이나 돈이 쏟아져 구체적인 돈 · 밥 · 옷의 부흥이 된다. 어쩌다 우연히 들어맞은 것을 보면 우리 동포들은 무슨 권능을 본 것처럼 돈이나 금가락지를 마구 내놓는다. 그것으로 무엇을 하느냐 하면 그냥 차에 실어 가지고 간다고 한다. 그래서 어리석은 백성들의 돈을 빼앗아 먹는 도둑놈의 소리를 듣고 있다. 이렇게 예수를 팔고 다니니 참으로 개탄스러운 일이 아닐 수 없다."
“이 세상이 괴로운 까닭을 원죄(原罪)로 돌리는데, 이 사람이 늘 하는 얘기지만 원죄라는 것은 다른 것이 아니라 삼독(三毒)을 말한다. 우리는 이 삼독의 원죄를 피해야 한다. 아담과 하와가 무엇을 따먹어서 그의 자손이 이같이 되었다고 자손들에게 죄다가 뒤집어씌우는데 그따위 말이 어디 있는가? 그것은 일종의 신학으로 그렇게 생겨 나온 것이다. 스스로 우리 자신을 반성해보면 알 수 있다. 못된 뿌리가 세 개가 있음을 누구나 부인하지 못할 것이다. 이 삼독을 우리는 지워버리는 데 힘써야 한다.”
