브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 미국이 오는 3월 12일부터 한국산 철강에 대해 25% 관세를 부과하기로 결정했다.
AP통신에 따르면 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령은 10일(현지시간) 포고문 발표를 통해, 한국산 철강 제품에 대한 수출 협정이 미국 동부시간 기준 3월12일 0시1분(한국시간 오후 2시1분)부터 효력을 잃는다고 밝혔다.
이에 따라 한국에서 미국으로 수출하는 철강에는 25%, 알루미늄에는 10% 관세가 부과된다.
트럼프 대통령은 한국 뿐 아니라 일본과 캐나다, 멕시코, 유럽연합(EU), 아르헨티나, 호주, 브라질과 맺은 협정도 종료된다고 명시했다.
트럼프 대통령은 앞선 1기 임기 시절 무역확장법 232조를 바탕으로 철강 수입 제품에 25% 관세를 부과했으나, 한국 등 일부 국가와는 철강 무관세 쿼터 협정을 체결한 바 있다.
그러나 이같은 협정 때문에 국가 안보 위협이 계속됐다고 주장하면서 이번 포고문을 통해 무관세 쿼터 협정을 파기한 것이다.
트럼프 대통령은 "국가 안보를 지키는데 필요하기 때문에 이러한 조치를 한 것"이라며 "계속해서 조치의 이행과 효과를 모니터링할 것이다. 적절한 경우에는 이 결정을 재검토할 수 있다"고 말했다.
한편, 우리나라는 쿼터제를 통해 연간 263만톤의 철강 제품을 무관세로 미국에 수출해왔다. 한국철강협회에 따르면 미국은 한국의 주요 철강 수출국으로, 전체 수출 비중의 약 10%를 넘어선다. 금액으로 따지면 6조원대 시장이다. 쿼터제가 폐지되면 수출 물량 감소 등 타격이 클 수밖에 없다.
