대전 동구(구청장 박희조)는 11일 정월대보름을 맞아 용운동 용방마을아파트 앞 '할아버지·할머니탑'에서 탑제를 봉행했다.
용운동은 과거 용(龍)이 마을(坊)에 들어 앉았다는 의미인 '용방이 마을'로 불리웠으며, 오랜 기간동안 마을의 수호신 역할을 해온 할아버지 ·할머니 탑이 있다.
매년 정월대보름 용방이마을(현, 용운동) 주민들은 이 탑 앞에 모여 마을의 안정과 풍년을 빌고 나쁜 기운을 몰아내기 위해 탑제를 지내왔다.
'할아버지·할머니탑'의 유래는 조선시대 연산군·광해군 시기부터 시작된 것으로 전해진다.
현재 수도권 경기 지역을 기반으로 삶의 터전을 일궈왔던 '풍천 임씨' 가문이 지금의 용운동 지역으로 대거 이주해 집성촌이 만들어졌고, 당시 유행했던 돌림병(홍역, 수두)과 액운을 막아주길 기원하며 '남장신탑과 여장신탑'을 세웠다.

'할아버지 탑'의 경우, 지난 2019년 용운동 향토 사료 석 장승 보존을 위해 시 예산을 지원받아 보호각 설치 등 주변 정비가 이뤄졌으나, '할머니 탑'은 도로변 철창 속에 갇힌 채 행사 때에만 잠시 그 모습을 공개하는 등 관리 상 어려움이 적지 않았다.
그러나 작년 대전 동구 주민 참여예산 사업으로 '할머니 탑 정비'가 선정되면서 재단 정비와 철제문 해체 등 공간 조성 과정을 거쳐 새로운 볼거리, 역사·문화 체험의 장으로 용운동 주민들 곁에 다시 서게 됐다.
박희조 동구청장은 "올 한해 너무나도 혼란스럽고 많은 일들, 경기 침체 등으로 인해 구민 여러분들께 걱정과 심려를 끼쳐 드리진 않았는지 걱정된다"면서 "동구와 용운동의 발전, 민생 안정, 건강한 지역사회를 만들기 위한 노력을 게을리 하지 않겠다"고 말했다.
