필자는 전남 담양군 수북면에 소재한 수북 초등학교 39회 졸업생이다. 1965년, 초등학교를 졸업했으니, 올해로 60년째이다.
수북면은 북쪽으로 병풍산과 삼인산(三人山)이 있다. 특히 삼인산, 이 산 아래 동네에서 국가-세계에 크게 기여할, 전 세계적으로 유명한 3명의 뛰어난 인재가 태어날 것이라는 특이한 전설이 있어왔다. 미국의 ‘큰 바위 얼굴’ 전설 같은 내용이다. 풍수지리 상 길지(吉地)라는 것이다.
이런 내용은 초등학교 때 선생님들한테 자주 들었었다. 그러하니, 삼인산 아래에서 태어난 그 어떤 사람이든지, 그 전설을 가슴에 새겨둘 일이었다. 희망을 주는, 전설(傳說)이었다. 필자 역시 그런 꿈을 꾸며 살아왔었다. 그런 전설이 없는 것 보다는 낫다는 생각이다.
2월12일 저녁, 필자의 초등학교 동창들 몇 명이 필자의 회사를 방문했다. 이 가운데 김진원 친구(국방부 군공무원 은퇴)는 삼인산 전설의 주인공 가문(家門)이다. 카카오톡 김범수(카카오 경영쇄신위원회 위원장) 설립자의 친(親) 당숙(아버지의 사촌 형제-당숙)이기 때문이다.

카카오 설립자 김범수의 본적지는 전남 담양군 수북면 두정리 449번지이다. 필자 태생지(풍수리 700번지)에서 북쪽으로 윗마을에 위치한다. 아주 가까운 거리이다.
일제 강점기 때 일제는 전북 김제-만경 평야 일대에 눈독을 들였다. 쌀의 생산이 풍부해 전투식량의 수탈 장소로 지정, 제일 먼저 이곳까지 철로를 개설했다. 이곳에서 쌀을 수탈, 만주 정복의 군량미로 조달했다. 군산항을 통해 쌀을 전장(戰場) 지역으로 실어 나르기도 했다. 전북 만경평야의 재력(財力)은 동아일보(김성수 사주의 고향)를 탄생케 하는 배후였다.
거기에 비교하면, 삼인산 아래 수북면 일대는 평야가 좁아, 일제의 식량 수탈 장소가 되진 않았다. 겨우 먹고 살 정도의 식량 소출지역이었다. 1945년 해방 이후, 산업화 과정에서도 소외된 지역이라 공장 하나 없었다. 아주 낙후된 농촌이다.
