브레이크뉴스 최애리 기자= 세계 최대 커피 체인점 스타벅스는 24일(현지시간) 관리직 1100명을 감원할 방침이라고 밝혔다.
AP통신 보도에 따르면 브라이언 니콜 스타벅스 최고경영자(CEO)는 이날 직원들에게 보낸 메시지에서 이같은 감원 실시를 통보했다.
니콜 CEO는 실적 부진이 계속되고 있다면서 인건비 등 비용 삭감과 조직 구조조정을 통해 경영 체제를 슬림화해야 한다고 설명했다.
스타벅스의 이번 감원 발표는 사상최대 규모다. 앞서 2018년 스타벅스는 약 350명을 감축한 바 있다.
스타벅스는 2024년 9월 말 시점에 매장 직원을 포함해 전 세계에서 36만1000명을 고용하고 있다.
매장 직원은 감원 대상에서 제외했으며 퇴사 대상은 기업 경영과 관리업무를 담당하는 직원 1만6000명 중 약 7% 정도다.
스타벅스는 아울러 공석인 수백개의 보직에 대해서도 채용하지 않겠다고 발표했다.
니콜 CEO는 "조직 구조를 간소화하고 계층과 중복 업무를 배제해 소규모로 기동력 있는 팀을 만들겠다"고 강조했다.
한편, 멕시코 요리 체인점 '치폴레 멕시칸 그릴' 경영재건을 주도한 니콜 CEO는 그 수완을 높이산 스타벅스에 의해 2024년 9월 영입됐다.
하지만 취임한지 6개월이 지났으나 주요시장인 미국과 중국에서 판매부진에 시달리고 있다. 2024년 10~12월 분기 순익은 전년 동기에 비해 24% 대폭 줄었고 4분기 연속 매출액과 순익도 감소했다.
