충남 서천군이 해양산업 활성화에 박차를 가하며 어촌 경제 활성화의 새로운 전환점을 맞이하고 있다.
군은 해양수산부가 주관한 ‘2025년 어촌신활력증진사업(유형1)’ 공모에서 장항항이 최종 대상지로 선정됨에 따라 국비 150억 원을 포함한 총 300억 원(도비 45억 원, 군비 105억 원)의 사업비를 확보했다. 이는 지난해 홍원항에 이어 2년 연속 선정된 성과로, 전국 지자체 중 유일한 사례다.
장항항은 과거 철도·항구·제련소를 기반으로 번성했던 근대 산업도시였지만, 장항제련소 폐쇄와 장항역 이전, 하굿둑 건설 등으로 항구 기능이 위축되며 침체를 겪어왔다. 이에 서천군은 이번 어촌신활력증진사업을 지역 내 대규모 개발사업과 연계해 장항항을 해양·수산·관광이 공존하는 경제 거점으로 탈바꿈할 계획이다.
사업은 2025년부터 2029년까지 5년간 추진되며, 주요 사업으로 ▲수산물 가공·유통 및 공동건조센터 조성 ▲해양바이오·수산가공기술 창업·창직센터 구축 ▲해양수산문화 커뮤니티센터 건립 등이 포함된다.
또한, 관광 활성화를 위해 ▲해양 친수공간 조성 ▲송림리 관광지와 연계한 순환산책로 개설 ▲해양문화 체험시설 구축도 추진될 예정이다.
특히, 약 2500억 원 규모의 민간투자사업을 유치해 대규모 휴양숙박 시설을 개발하고, 송림리 관광지와 연계해 관광객 유입을 극대화할 방침이다.
