브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 6일(현지 시간) 미국·멕시코·캐나다 자유무역협정(USMCA)을 준수하는 멕시코와 캐나다산 제품에는 25% 관세 부과를 한달 유예하겠다고 밝혔다.
AP통신 보도에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 백악관 집무실에서 USMCA를 준수하는 멕시코와 캐나다산 제품에 대해서는 25% 관세 적용을 한달간 유예하는 명령에 서명했다.
트럼프 대통령은 전날 쥐스탱 트뤼도 캐나다 총리와, 이날 클라우디아 셰인바움 멕시코 대통령과 각각 통화한 뒤, USMCA를 준수하는 수입품에 대해서는 오는 4월 2일까지 관세 부과를 연기하기로 결정했다.
USMCA는 트럼프 1기 행정부 당시 북미자유무역협정(NAFTA)을 대체해 새로 체결한 무역협정이다. 이 협정에 따라 3국간 거래되는 제품은 대부분 관세가 면제됐다.
백악관 관계자에 따르면 캐나다에서 수입하는 물품의 약 62%가, 멕시코 수입품의 절반 가량이 USMCA 요건을 지키지 않고 있다. 이러한 협정 요건을 갖추지 못한 상품은 25% 과세 대상이 된다.
또한 오는 4월 2일 부터는 대부분 국가를 대상으로 한 상호관세를 부과할 것이라고 예고했다.
상호관세는 상대국이 미국에 부과하는 수준으로 동일한 관세를 부과하겠다는 개념이다.
트럼프 대통령은 지난 4일 의회 연설에서 한국을 직접 언급하며 "미국에 4배 높은 관세를 부과하고 있다"고 주장하기도 했다.
한편, 캐나다는 이같은 한달 유예에도 1차 발표한 보복관세는 그대로 유지하겠다고 발표했다.
앞서 캐나다는 미국의 관세 조치에 대한 보복 조치로 1550억캐나다달러(약 155조원) 규모의 미국 제품에 25% 관세를 매긴다고 밝혔다.
다만 2차 보복관세에 대해선 4월 2일 이후에 결정하는 것으로 연기했다.
도미닉 르블랑 캐나다 재무장관은 6일 자신의 'X'에서 "트럼프가 관세를 유예하는 행정명령에 서명함에 따라 2차 보복 관세는 일단 보류했다"라며 "캐나다는 4월 2일까지 1250억 캐나다달러 규모의 미국 제품에 대한 두 번째 관세를 부과하지 않을 것"이라고 밝혔다.
