브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 유럽연합(EU)이 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령의 관세 부과에 대응해 오는 4월부터 260억 유로(한화 약 41조원) 규모에 달하는 미국 제품에 관세를 매기기로 했다.
AP통신에 따르면 EU 집행위원회는 12일(현지 시간) "EU가 수출하는 철강 및 알루미늄 제품에 대한 미국의 부당한 새로운 관세 부과에 대응해 미국 수입품에 대해 신속하고 비례적인 대응조치를 취하겠다"고 밝혔다.
우르줄라 폰데어라이엔 EU 집행위원장은 "미국의 철강 및 알루미늄 25% 관세 부과 조치를 깊이 유감스럽게 생각한다"면서 "EU는 (유럽) 소비자와 산업을 보호하기 위해 행동해야 한다"고 했다.
EU는 미국의 신규 과세 부과 대상이 최대 260억 유로 규모라고 보고, 같은 규모로 보복 관세를 매기는 것이라 설명했다.
특히 이러한 조치는 불가피한 대응이라는 점을 언급하며 추가 협상의 여지가 있음을 강조했다.
EU측은 "우리의 대책은 두 단계로, 4월 1일 시작해 4월 13일부터 완전히 시행된다"라며 "하지만 우리의 협상 테이블은 항상 열려 있을 것이다. 우리는 의미 있는 대화에 참여할 준비가 돼있다"고 강조했다.
