나의 고향은 전남 담양군 수북면 풍수리 입니다. 담양 중학교와 담양농고(실업고)를 졸업했습니다. 1972년 출향(出鄕=고향 떠나기), 오늘에 이르렀습니다.
그간 미국 뉴욕의 맨해튼 생활 5년(1985-1989)을 빼고는 계속해서 '서울 살이'를 했습니다. 낳고 자란 고향을 떠나 살았으니, 뿌리 뽑힌 몸이랄 수 있습니다.
3월13일 저녁은 살아오면서 운(運)이 좋은 날인 듯합니다. 나의 고향은 담양인데, 내 고향(전라남도 담양군 대전면 서옥리 출신)의 현직 국회의원인 이개호 의원(4선 의원-농림축산식품부 전 장관)과 저녁을 함께 했습니다.

이 분은 내 고향 담양과 지역구(전남 담양-장성-영광-함평)가 키워준, 호남의 큰 정치인입니다. 제24회 행정고시에 합격, 고위 공무원 생활, 의원-장관 생활을 해왔습니다.
필자는 자립주의(自立主義)입니다. 국가기관이나 정치권의 협조보다는 스스로 살아가려고 노력해온 자립주의자입니다. 그래서 정치권에 기웃거리지 않았습니다. 그런 고로, 고향 국회의원인 이개호 의원이 4선-장관을 할 때, 한 번도 찾아가지 않았습니다. 필자는 줄곧 비주류(非主流) 언론(신문사 발행인) 속에서 살아 왔습니다. 그런데, 이개호 의원은 주류(主流) 정치인입니다. 필자는 멀리서나마, 이 의원이 전라도 출신의 좋은 정치인-큰 정치인으로 성장해 가기만을 빌었습니다.
김정현 왕대변인님(전 민주당 대변인)과 함께, 이개호 의원을 만나게 됐습니다.
고향출신 한국 정치계의 유능한 분을 만나니, 운(運)이 좋은 날이라고 생각됩니다. 이개호 의원...이 분은 국가기관과 지자체에서 장관, 국장, 부시장 등등의 다양한 행정경험을 쌓았습니다. 그리고 의회에 입문, 4선의원(19-20-21-22대)으로 높은 정치력을 지닌 분입니다. 승승장구(乘勝長驅), 전라도가 낳은 큰 정치인, 또는 국가를 위해 큰일을 할, 국가의 지도자로 남아지기를 빕니다.
