모든 종교는 이단(異端)으로 출발, 정통(正統)이 되어 왔다. 개신교의 역사를 보면 안다. 예수는 이단으로 취급돼, 십자가 틀에 매달려 사형 당했다. 오늘날 개신교의 출반지점은 그랬다. 우리나라 근-현대사를 보면, 이단시된 종교가 정통화 되는 과정이 드러난다.

필자의 회사 지근거리에는 서울 중구 서소문공원 천주교 현양탑이 있다. 이 탑의 비석에는 한국 천주교가 초기 전래(傳來)과정에서 탄압받았던 실상이 그대로 담겨 있다. 이 비는 천주교인들의 아픔-슬픔-고통을 기록하고 있다. 천주교 전래 100년사에 수많은 순교자가 발생했기 때문이다. 이 비에는 1801년부터 1871년까지 44명이 박해받아 순교(죽임 당함)했다고 기록돼 있다.
그 시대, 현재의 서소문 공원은 사형장이었다. 반(反)국가 인물이나 범죄자를 처형하는 형장이었다. 예리한 칼로 사람의 목을 쳤다. 이조시대, 그 많은 천주교 신도가 죽임 당함은 인간의 야만성 때문이다. 유교에서 강조하는 제사 등을 거부했다는 이유에서다. 기득권 종교 세력이 새로 유입된 종교, 또는 구교가 신교(新敎)의 신자를 죽인 것이다. 현대에서 그리 멀지 않은, 154년 전의 시점이다. 한국 천주교는 이 시련을 겪고, 오늘날 한국 사회의 거대-주류 종교로 거듭났다.
조용기 목사가 1958년 설립한 여의도 순복음교회(교단)는 개신교로부터 이단 시 됐다. 이 교회-교단은 단일교회로서는 가장 큰 교회다. 세계적인 거대 교회로 급성장했다. 그러나 지속적으로 이단 비판을 받아왔었다. 그런데 지난 2012년 여의도순복음교회의 당회장인 이영훈 목사가 한국기독교총연합회(한기총)의 회장이 됐다. 이단이 정통화된 사례이다. 필자는 한국 천주교, 여의도순복음 교단이 탄압받은 시대를 거쳐 주류 종교로 발전한 것을 주목한다.
유럽을 여행하다 보면 중세 시대에 기독교 신-구교의 종교전쟁 흔적들을 볼 수 있다. 같은 기독교이면서도 서로 살육(殺戮)하는 전쟁을 치렀다.
여기에서 필자가 중요시 이기는 것은, 인류사회의 평화-번영에 꼭 필요한 것은 '융합(融合)정신'이라는 사실이다. 모든 종교는 인간을 이롭게 하려는 데서 출반한다. 그 정신이 유지-발전돼야 한다.
필자는 지난 28년 간(1989년 이후)언론매체를 경영해온 사주(社主)이다. 내가 발행인으로 있는 '주간현대' '사건의 내막' '브레이크뉴스' 등은 매체는 그 어떤 종교이든지, 차별하지 않고, 공평하게 보도하는 보도원칙을 지켜왔다. 불교, 가톨릭, 개신교, 이슬람교, 대순진리회, 통일교회, 에덴성회, 신천지예수교회, 기독교복선교회(JMS) 등등, 차별을 두지 않은 보도관행을 만들었다. 모든 종교를 공히 동등-평등하게 바라보려는 시각이다.

필자는 회사에서 가까운 거리에 있는 서울 중구 서소문공원으로 가끔씩 산책을 나간다. 그때마다 천주교가 세운 현양탑과 마주친다. 이 공원에 들어설 때마다, 인간이 얼마나 야만적인가를 생각한다. 불과 154 전에, 천주교가 이단(異端)이라고, 사람이 사람의 목을 치는 죽임의 현장을 상상하곤 한다. 인간이 지닌 섬뜩한 야만성(野蠻性)과 만난다.
세상 사람들은 더러 나를 비난한다. “당신 신문들은 늘 이단-사이비 종교들을 보도한다”고. 세상에는 영원한 이단이 없다. 종교에서 항구적인 이단은 존재하지 않는다. 모든 종교는 시간이 경과하면서, 오래도록 시간이 묵혀지면서, 정통종교로 변했다는 사실을 알아야 한다.
대한민국의 번영을 존중한다. 그 번영의 밑바닥에 있는 융합정신을 존중한다. 남의 종교를, 남의 신앙을 관대하게 바라보는 융합정신에, 대한민국의 평화적인-항구적인 미래가 있다고 생각한다. moonilsuk@naver.com
