대전시청각장애특수교육지원센터(교장 문성준)가 대전대학교 학생들을 대상으로 시각장애 이해 교육을 실시했다고 27일 밝혔다.
이번 교육은 대전대학교 LINC3.0 프로젝트인 ‘캡스톤디자인’ 수업의 일환으로 학생들이 학제간 융합 등 과제 유형을 선정, 사회적 문제 해결을 위한 창의적 방안을 주도적으로 탐색할 수 있는 기회를 제공하기 위해 마련됐다.
지난 26일 진행된 교육에서는 ▲시각장애의 특성과 유형, ▲한글점자 학습 및 독해, ▲일상생활 보행 훈련(안내 보행, 상부·하부 보호법, 흰지팡이 보행)의 세 가지 핵심 과제들이 제공됐으며, 직접적으로 시각장애인들의 삶을 체험하는 과정을 통해 학생들이 스스로 여러 가지 사회문화적·환경적 장애물들을 탐색·이해하는 시간을 가질 수 있도록 했다.

특히, 시각장애인이 촉각을 활용해 읽고 쓸 수 있도록 고안된 문자 체계 ‘점자’를 점판, 점필로 써보고 주어진 점자 원고를 해독해보는 교육과정과 보행법을 경험하는 시간을 가짐으로써 학생들이 ‘시각장애 및 무장애(Barrier-free)’에 대해 실제적 관점으로 접근할 수 있는 계기가 됐다.
캡스톤디자인 수업에 참여하고 있는 한 학생은 “다른 학생과 흰지팡이에 의지해 넓은 복도와 가파른 계단을 내려가는 경험을 해보니 실생활에서 시각장애인이 어떤 위험에 노출될 가능성이 있는지 알 수 있었다”면서 “베리어프리를 비롯해 여러 방면으로 관련 사례를 정리해 시각장애를 겪고 있는 사람들이 사회적·환경적 장애에 노출될 가능성을 줄일 수 있는 방안을 연구해 보고 싶다”고 말했다.
대전대 캡스톤디자인 교육과정 담당 교수는 “대전맹학교와의 협업을 통해 진행된 이번 수업을 통해 우리 학생들이 장애인들의 삶을 간접적으로나마 느끼고 그들이 겪는 환경적 배제, 차별 등의 사회적 문제를 해결할 수 있는 창의적 방안을 고민해 볼 수 있는 시간이 됐으면 한다”고 전했다.

대전맹학교 문성준 교장은 “2007년 전국 최초로 설치된 대전시청각장애특수교육지원센터는 지역사회와 항상 협력적 관계를 유지하기 위해 최선을 다하고 있다. 유·초·중·고부터 대학에 이르기까지 여러 기관들과 적극적으로 교류하면서 장애에 대한 잘못된 인식들이 긍정적으로 변화될 수 있도록 변함없이 노력하겠다”는 뜻을 밝혔다.
한편, 대전시청각장애특수교육지원센터는 시·청각장애 학생의 교육과 재활에서 요구되는 특수교육 제반 서비스 지원을 통해 학업 성취도를 높이고, 성공적인 사회통합과 독립적 삶을 영위할 수 있도록 ‘드림아이 시기능 교실, 아웃리치 계절학교, 드림인 멘토링, 토요스포츠데이, 포커스 상담, 어깨동무 장애이해교육’ 등의 사업을 진행하고 있다.
