출판사 대양미디어는 이종철 철학박사의 소설집 『그대에게 가는 먼 길』을 출간했다.
출판사 대양미디어는 3월 27일치 보도자료에서 “철학자가 소설을 썼다! 생소한 일은 아니지만 한국처럼 영역과 경계를 많이 따지는 곳에서는 쉽지 않은 일이다. 작가 이종철 박사는 서양 근대 철학, 특히 근대 독일철학을 전공한 철학자로 오랫동안 활동을 해왔다. 지난 몇 년 전부터 그는 에세이철학에 심취해서 동서고금을 넘나드는 다양한 형태의 글을 써왔다. 이 소설은 이런 실험적 글쓰기의 산물이라 할 수 있다. 전공과 장르를 불문한 글쓰기가 드디어 소설 쓰기까지 발전한 셈”이라고 설명하고 “서양에서는 이러한 시도가 흔하지 않다. 사르트르의 경우는 철학자로서 많이 알려져 있는데, 사실 그는 소설도 꽤 썼다. 덕분에 노벨 문학상을 수상했지만 철학자의 신념을 지키고자 그 상을 거부했다. 10여 년 전 영화로도 나온 『리스본행 야간열차』의 작가인 파스칼 메르시어의 본명은 피터 비에리(Peter Bieri)는 하이델베르크 대학 철학부 출신으로 독일의 여러 대학에서 강의를 한 철학교수”라고, 소개했다.
보도자료에 따르면, 철학자 이종철 박사가 가 쓴 소설집 『그대에게 가는 먼 길』은 총 2부작. 1부작은 1970년대에서 1990년대 중반에 걸쳐 있다. 2부작은 2010년대에서 2020년대 중반에 걸친 격동의 한국 사회를 배경으로 개인의 자전적 경험을 쓴 소설.
이번에 나온 책은 2부작 중 그 1부. 잘 알려져 있듯 이 시기에 한국인들은 유신 독재와 광주 항쟁, 민주화 투쟁과 1987년의 민주주의의 쟁취 등으로 점철된 고통스럽고 의미 있는 역사적 경험을 겪었다. 동시에 이 시기는 사회과학의 전성기이자 온갖 이론과 사상이 난무하던 지적 르네상스의 시기이기도 했다. 물론 특정한 세계관과 사상이 지배적 이기는 했지만, 이 시대는 그것들을 수동적으로 받아들이는 이상으로 한국 사회의 변혁운동과 맞물려 상호 피드백 하면서 백가쟁명을 이루기도 했다.
저자는 이 시기를 프랑스의 6.8 혁명 못지않은 시대라고 생각하고 있다. 하지만 프랑스인들은 6.8 혁명을 겪으면서 자신들의 이론과 사상을 정립해서 세계인들에게 내 보였던 반면, 한국인들은 그런 귀중한 역사적 체험을 그저 그런 과거의 기억으로만 간직하고 있을 뿐이다. 이 점을 안타깝게 생각한 저자는 우리가 겪은 이 시대의 체험을 철학적으로 반성하고 의미화하고 싶은 욕구를 소설의 형식을 빌려 표현했다.
저자인 이종철 박사는 이 소설의 형식을 통해 본업인 철학에 대해 반성하는 경험을 많이 했다. 철학자가 소설가들에게 배워야 것이 하나 있다. 철학자들은 허구한 날 남의 철학이나 사상을 끌어들여 해석하고 해설하는 일로 평생을 보내는 데 비해, 소설가들은 비록 3류라 해도 그들은 언제나 자신의 체험과 생각을 자신의 언어로 표현하려고 한다.

철학자들이 개념화된 사유를 하기 때문에 주관적 언어를 쓰기 어려운 면이 있지만, 한국의 철학자들은 그 정도가 심해서 남의 언어와 남의 철학을 가져오지 못하면 사유를 하지 못할 정도다. 그들이 안고 있는 고질적인 문제는 자신들의 체험을 바탕으로 자신들의 철학을 구성하기보다는 여전히 바깥의 수입 철학에 의존하고 2천 년도 넘은 공맹과 노장사상을 주석하는 수준에 머물러 있는데 있다. 이런 지적 식민성과 사대주의가 한국의 지성계를 지배하고 있기 때문에 자신들이 겪은 위대한 경험을 과거로 묻어 버린 채 그저 바깥에서 들어온 새로운 이론과 사상 혹은 오래된 사상에 목을 매달고 있을 뿐이다.
출판사측은 “『그대에게 가는 먼 길』은 그저 과거를 기록한 한 권의 소설에 그치는 것이 아니다. 그것은 현재 인문학이 처한 ‘문송의 시대’를 돌아보면서 새로운 돌파구를 마련하는 계기가 될 수도 있을 것이다. 인문학은 끊임없이 주어지는 위기의 잿더미 속에서 부활하는 피닉스와 같다. 인문학의 현실이 당장은 꺼져갈 듯 어려워 보이지만, 인문학은 새로운 환경의 변화를 숙지하면서 부활의 날갯짓을 할 것“이라고 강조했다.

연세대 법학과를 졸업한 후 동 대학원 철학과에서 석사와 박사학위를 받았다. 연세대, 교원대, 숙명여대, 서울여대 등에서 강의했다. 몽골 후레 정보통신대학 한국어과 교수와 한국학연구소장을 역임했다. 한남대 초빙교수를 마지막으로 대학에서 은퇴를 했다. 현재는 연세대 인문학연구원 전임연구원으로 재직하고 있다. 그는 <브레이크뉴스>와 <저널인뉴스>의 칼럼니스트로 활동하면서 ‘에세이철학’ 분야를 새로 개척하고 있다. NGO 환경단체인 <푸른아시아>의 홍보대사를 맡고 있다.

Because this kind of intellectual colonialism and chauvinism dominates the intellectual world of Korea, they are simply burying their great experiences in the past and clinging to new theories and ideas or old ideas that came from outside.

Dr. Lee Jong-cheol’s Biography
After graduating from the Department of Law at Yonsei University, he received his master’s and doctoral degrees from the Department of Philosophy at the same university. He lectured at Yonsei University, Kyowon University, Sookmyung Women's University, and Seoul Women's University. He served as a professor of the Korean language department at Mongolian Hure University of Information and Communications and as the director of the Institute of Korean Studies. He retired from the university after serving as a visiting professor at Hannam University. He is currently a full-time researcher at the Institute of Humanities at Yonsei University. He is a columnist for <Break News> and <Journal in News>, and is pioneering a new field of 'essay philosophy'. He is the public relations ambassador for the NGO environmental group <Blue Asia>.
His books include <Philosophy and Criticism - For the Revival of Essay Philosophy> and <Everyday Life is Philosophy>. His co-authored works include <Philosopher's Study>, <Crooked Philosophy>, <Us and Hegel's Philosophy>, <Beyond the Crisis of Civilization>, and <The 44th Anniversary of the Sabuk Struggle>.
