출산율 하락과 원도심 인구 유출로 존폐 기로에 놓였던 대전 중구 석교동의 '동명중학교'가 획기적인 교육 패러다임 전환으로 지역사회의 이목을 끌고 있다.
폐교 위기에 직면했던 이 학교는 올해부터 ‘예술·미디어 특성화중학교’로 탈바꿈하며 새로운 교육 모델을 선보이고 있다.
동명중학교는 개교 당시 9학급 183명으로 출발했으나, 최근 몇 년간 학생 수가 급감해 2024년 기준 재학생 수가 87명에 그치는 등 존립 자체가 흔들리고 있었다. 그러나 올해 전국 19번째, 대전에서는 처음으로 특성화중학교로 전환하면서 전학년 기준 100% 정원을 채우며 재도약에 성공했다.
