이주호 사회부총리 겸 교육부 장관은 17일 오후 정부서울청사에서 브리핑을 열고 2026학년도 의대 모집인원을 당초대로 3058명으로 조정하겠다고 밝혔다.
정치권에선 의대 증원을 골자로 한 의료개혁을 강력히 추진했던 윤석열 전 대통령이 탄핵되면서 결국 동력을 잃은 정부가 의대 증원을 원점으로 돌린 것으로 분석하며 정부가 국민에 약속한 원칙을 또 다시 저버렸다고 비판했다.
보건복지부는 지난해 2월 의대 증원을 발표하며 전공의 사직 불허, 불응 시 행정처분까지 예고하며 강하게 밀어붙였지만 결론은 사직은 수용됐고 복귀 여부에 관계없이 행정처분도 철회했다.
