더불어민주당 이재명 전 대표가 17일 방위산업 육성 방안을 공개하며 대선 본선 대비 정책 드라이브에 속도를 내고 있다.
당내 유력 후보로 자리매김한 그는 ‘K-방산’을 국가 핵심 전략산업으로 육성하겠다는 구상을 밝히며, 안보와 경제 두 축을 모두 아우르는 공약으로 지지층 확장에 나섰다.
이 전 대표는 이날 오전 자신의 SNS를 통해 “한국을 글로벌 방산 4대 강국 반열에 올려놓겠다”고 천명했다. 그는 AI, 로봇, 정밀제어 기술 등 첨단 과학기술과 기존 제조 경쟁력을 융합한 방위산업이 우리 경제의 새로운 성장 동력이 될 것이라며, “K-방산은 이제 수출 산업의 한 축을 담당할 시점”이라고 강조했다.
아울러 방산 수출 확대와 산업 생태계 강화를 위해 ‘전담 컨트롤타워’ 신설과 ‘대통령 주재 방산수출전략회의 정례화’를 제안했다. 또 방산 기업의 R&D 투자에 세제 인센티브를 부여하고, 관련 스타트업 육성과 병역특례 제도 확대 등을 통해 산업 인력 기반도 넓혀야 한다고 주장했다.

이 전 대표는 같은 날 대전 국방과학연구소(ADD) 연구진들과 간담회 자리에서도 “역사적으로 과학기술에 집중한 국가는 도약했고, 이를 외면한 체제는 쇠락했다”며, 국방 과학기술 투자의 필요성을 거듭 강조했다. 특히 “한국은 지정학적으로 국방비를 많이 쓸 수밖에 없는 구조인 만큼, 그 예산을 미래 산업으로 연결해야 한다”고 덧붙였다.
이어 "수십만의 청년들을 병영이라는 틀 속에 단순히 가둔 채로 반복적 훈련을 하는데 시간을 소모하도록 하는 것이 효율적인가 하는 생각을 해본다"면서 "전문적인 기술집약형 부사관 복무나 전역 후에도 다방면으로 진로를 모색할 수 있게 전문 무기·장비체계 전문가 등으로 성장시킨다면 더욱 훌륭한 기회가 될 수 있을 것이라 생각한다"고 말했다.
한편, 민주당은 오는 19일 충북 청주에서 충청지역 합동연설회를 시작으로 대선 경선 레이스에 본격 돌입한다.
