발과 발목 분야에서 세계적인 전문가들이 모이는 국제 학술행사에서, 한국 의료진이 단연 주목을 받았다. 주인공은 SNU서울병원 족부전담팀 서상교 대표원장. 지난 4월 19일부터 20일까지 이틀간 인도 코임바토르의 Ganga 병원에서 열린 국제학회 ‘GFAI 2025(Ganga Foot & Ankle Instructional Course)’에서 기조강연자이자 수술 시연 집도의로 활약하며 큰 주목을 받았다.
MITA 3500례, 숫자가 말해주는 신뢰
GFAI는 전 세계 발·발목 수술 전문가들이 한자리에 모여 최신 수술법, 외상 및 변형 교정 등을 공유하는 권위 있는 학회다. 그 중심에서 서상교 원장은 ‘3500례 이상 시행한 MITA(Minimally Invasive Technique for Hallux Valgus, 무지외반증에 대한 최소 침습적 치료법)’ 수술 경험을 바탕으로 강연과 실습 지도, 라이브 수술까지 도맡았다.
‘My Journey of 3500 Hallux Valgus Cases(3500건의 무지외반증 수술을 해온 여정)’라는 제목의 기조강연에서 서 원장은 자신이 주도해온 최소침습 무지외반증 수술의 발전과정과 노하우를 풀어놓았다. 특히 4세대 MITA 수술로까지 발전한 기술을 중심으로 임상적 효과와 수술 안정성을 강조하며 인도 의료진으로부터 열띤 관심을 받았다.
서 원장은 강연뿐만 아니라, 학회 첫날부터 ‘Live Surgery(실시간 수술)’ 세션에서 직접 MITA 수술을 집도했다. 수술은 현장에서 생중계되며, 참가자들이 고도화된 술기를 직접 보고 배울 수 있는 자리였다. 현지 의료진은 서 원장의 섬세한 절개법과 정확한 교정 테크닉에 큰 감탄을 표했다.
또한 평발 세션의 패널로 참여해 활발한 토론을 이끌었으며, 발목 관절염 환자에 적용되는 SMO(Supra-Malleolar Osteotomy) 수술에 대한 연구 발표도 병행했다. MITA Hands-on Workshop에서는 메인 지도자로 참여해, 직접 인도 의료진의 손을 잡고 술기를 전수하며 학회의 교육적 가치를 높였다.

단순 초청 넘어, ‘의료교류의 다리’ 놓다
SNU서울병원 측은 “서상교 원장의 이번 GFAI 학회 참가와 활약은 단순한 의학적 발표를 넘어서, 국제 의료교류의 상징적인 사례”라고 강조했다. 실제로 병원은 매년 국내외 의료진들을 대상으로 연수교육, 수술 시연, 학술대회 등을 통해 임상 노하우를 공유하고 있다.
최근에도 인도에서 온 펠로우가 SNU서울병원에서 연수를 받았으며, 홍콩과 일본의 의료진도 병원을 방문해 정형외과 술기를 익혔다. 또한 병원은 외국인 환자 유치기관으로서도 활동을 넓히고 있는데, 최근에는 미국 애틀랜타에서 열린 ‘세계한인비즈니스대회’에 참가해 글로벌 의료 브랜드로서의 입지도 강화하고 있다.
서상교 원장은 학회를 마치며 “그동안의 임상 사례와 연구 성과를 토대로, 실제 의료 현장에서 도움이 되는 지식을 나눌 수 있어 매우 의미 있었다”며 “국제 학회에서 직접 술기를 보여주고, 인도 의료진들과 임상적 고민을 나눈 시간은 내게도 깊은 자극이 되었다”고 소감을 전했다.
이번 GFAI 2025에서 서 원장이 보여준 리더십과 전문성은 단순한 기술 전달을 넘어, 한국 의료의 깊이와 가능성을 전 세계에 각인시키는 계기가 됐다.

At an international academic event where world-class experts in the field of foot and ankle gathered, Korean doctors stole the spotlight. The protagonist was Dr. Seo Sang-gyo, head of the podiatry department at SNU Seoul Medical Center. From April 19 to 20, he served as a keynote lecturer and surgical demonstration surgeon at the Ganga Foot & Ankle Instructional Course (GFAI 2025), an international conference held at Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore, India.
3500 MITA cases, trust in numbers
GFAI is a prestigious conference that brings together foot and ankle surgery experts from around the world to share the latest surgical techniques, trauma and deformity correction, and more. At the center of the conference, Dr. Seo gave lectures, hands-on guidance, and live surgeries based on his experience of performing over 3500 MITA (Minimally Invasive Technique for Hallux Valgus) surgeries.
In his keynote lecture titled 'My Journey of 3500 Hallux Valgus Cases', Dr. Seo shared the development and know-how of minimally invasive hallux valgus surgery that he has led. In particular, he emphasized the clinical effectiveness and surgical safety of the technology, which has evolved to the fourth-generation MITA surgery, and received enthusiastic interest from the Indian medical staff.
In addition to his lecture, Dr. Seo performed a MITA surgery on the first day of the congress during the 'Live Surgery' session. The surgeries were broadcast live on-site, allowing participants to see and learn advanced techniques firsthand. Local medical staff were impressed with Dr. Seo's delicate incisions and precise correction techniques.
He also served as a panelist for the flatfoot session, leading a lively discussion and presenting his research on supra-malleolar osteotomy (SMO) surgery for ankle arthritis. In the MITA Hands-on Workshop, Dr. Lee served as the main leader and taught the Indian medical staff hands-on techniques, enhancing the educational value of the conference.
More than just an invitation, building a 'bridge of medical exchange'
“Dr. Seo's participation in the GFAI Congress is more than just a medical presentation, but a symbolic example of international medical exchange,” said SNU Seoul Hospital. In fact, the hospital shares its clinical know-how with domestic and foreign medical staff every year through training programs, surgical demonstrations, and academic conferences.
Recently, a fellow from India received training at SNU Seoul Hospital, and medical staff from Hong Kong and Japan have also visited the hospital to learn orthopedic techniques. The hospital is also expanding its activities to attract foreign patients, and recently participated in the World Korean Business Congress in Atlanta, U.S., to strengthen its position as a global healthcare brand.
“It was very meaningful to share knowledge that is useful in the actual medical field based on my clinical cases and research achievements,” said Dr. Seo at the end of the congress. ”The time I demonstrated my skills at the international congress and shared clinical concerns with Indian doctors was also deeply stimulating.”
Dr. Seo's leadership and expertise at GFAI 2025 went beyond the simple transfer of technology, and helped to showcase the depth and promise of Korean healthcare to the world.
