필자는 지난 4월21일 선종한 로마 가톨릭의 프란치스코 교황을 먼발치에서 바라본 적이 있습니다. 지난 2014년 8월16일이었습니다. 교황께서 한국에 입국, 서울시 중구 서소문 공원에 있는 순교성지를 방문했습니다.
필자의 회사에서 50m 거리에 천주교 순교성지가 위치, 이때 이곳에 직접 온, 프란치스코 교황님의 모습을 멀리서나마 알현하게 됐습니다.
프란치스코 교황님이 선종한 이후에 그 분의 청빈 실천(實踐) 면면이 기사화 됐습니다.
한겨레신문 4월23일자는 “교황이 남긴 전 재산 14만원…'부족함 없었습니다' ” 제목의 기사에서 “가난하고 소외된 자들을 위한 교회를 강조했던 프란치스코 교황이 21일 선종 뒤 남긴 재산은 100달러에 불과했다고 아르헨티나 매체 암비토가 보도했다.”고 전하고 “암비토는 자산정보 사이트인 ‘셀레브리티 넷 워스’를 인용, 교황이 사망 당시 미화 100달러 정도의 순자산을 보유하고 있었다고 전했다. 보통 바티칸의 추기경들은 4700달러(약 670만원) 정도의 월급을 받지만, 프란치스코 교황은 2013년 3월 즉위 뒤 별도의 급여를 받지 않겠다고 선언하고 무보수로 일해 왔다”고 보도했습니다.
프란치스코 교황의 장례미사는 지난 4월27일 오전 10시(현지 시간)에 치러졌습니다. 손희영 서울예대 교수는 이 장례 미사에 참석하고 참관기를 언론에 기고했습니다.
이 글에서 “교황님의 마지막 가시는 길은 너무나도 단촐 했다. 평소 대중들과 만나실 때 타시던 흰색 작은 무개차에 실린 목관에는 아무런 장식도 꽃도 없었다. 운구차를 뒤따르는 마차도 기마병도 없었다. 이민자들의 고난과 가난한 자, 약자, 소외된 이들의 보호자이자 지지자였던 프란치스코 교황님의 마지막 가시는 길에 추모객들은 일제히 침묵 속에 큰 박수로 작별했다”고 썼습니다.
교황님은 유언에서 자신의 무덤에 대해서도 언급했다고 합니다. 그는 “간단하게, 특별한 장식 없이, 오직 이름만 새겨 달라”고 유언했습니다.
프란치스코 교황은 직접 남긴 유언의 글(편지문)에서 “이 세상에 진정으로 ‘내 것’이라 부를 수 있는 것은 하나도 없습니다”면서 “사랑하는 사람도 자식도, 친구도 심지어 이 몸뚱이조차 잠시 머물렀다 가는 인연일 뿐입니다”고 강조했습니다.
교황님의 청빈한 삶은 한국 어느 새(신흥)종교 교주의 삶과 크게 대비가 됩니다. 그는 교인들의 모아준 헌금을 자신의 소유 재산처럼 제 맘대로 유용하면서 살았습니다. 그분이 창립한 교단은 그 가족을 후계자로 내세웠고, 그 후계자의 몸에 걸친 보석들이 휘황찬란했습니다. 종교를 이용한 치부의 전형적인 본보기였습니다. 이런 한국산 새 종교들의 지도자들도 선종(善終)한 프란치스코 교황의 청빈한 삶을 본 받았으면 합니다.
종교 지도자와 재산의 규모. 어느 정도가 최고로 낮은 규모의 재산일까요?
고(故) 프란치스코 교황은 종교 지도자의 청빈(淸貧)이 어느 정도여야 하는가? 그 하한선(下限線)을 보여 주었다고 생각합니다. 사람이 이 세상에 태어났다가 저 세상으로 돌아갈 때, 그때 가진 재화의 전액(全額)이 100달러. 한국 돈으로 14만원. 이 정도의 재화라면 인생을 잘 살았다는 외침입니다. 한국의 새 종교(신흥) 지도자들 고(故) 프란치스코 교황한테서 어느 청빈인지? 진정한 청빈사상을 배울 수 있었으면 합니다.
