지금의 국민의힘은 차기 대선 승리를 위해 모든 것을 걸어야 할 역사적 기로에 서 있다. 정권 재창출은 단지 정치적 과제에 그치지 않는다. 이는 보수 진영의 존립, 나아가 대한민국의 미래 비전을 지켜내느냐의 중대한 시험대이다. 바로 이 국면에서 한동훈(국민의힘 전 대표)이라는 정치인은 단순한 신인의 위치에 머무를 수 없다. 이제 그는 보수 진영의 리더로서 국민의힘 전체를 통합하고 시대의 요구에 응답할 수 있는 리더십을 실천해야 한다.

한동훈은 정치권 입문 이후, 빠른 시간 안에 압도적인 인지도를 획득했다. 세련된 외모와 도시적 감각, 정제된 언어 구사력은 그를 일약 ‘보수 진영의 스타’로 만들었고, 검찰 시절 보여준 단호함과 냉철함은 대중에게 강한 인상을 남겼다. 특히 디지털 소통에 능하고, 젊은 층과의 접점을 형성할 줄 아는 정치인은 드문 만큼, 그의 존재는 보수 진영 내에서도 새로운 세대의 구심점으로 평가받기에 충분했다.
그러나 지금 이 시점에서 요구되는 것은 ‘스타 정치인’이 아닌 ‘국가를 이끄는 지도자’의 그릇이다. 정치는 이미지가 아니라 방향이며, 대권은 개인의 명예가 아닌 국민 전체의 미래다. 그런 점에서 한동훈에게는 명확한 질문 하나가 던져진다. 그는 지금 ‘국가와 당을 위한 전면적 헌신’의 길에 서 있는가? 아니면 대선 이후 자신의 입지를 키우기 위한 정치적 설계에 골몰하고 있는가?
최근의 그의 행보는 유감스럽게도 후자의 인상을 짙게 풍긴다. 당의 통합보다는 자신의 정치적 자산을 지키려는 태도, 특히 김문수와의 갈등 국면에서 보여준 일련의 태도는 정치적 대화보다는 조건부 협상에 가까웠다. 정치는 혼자 하는 것이 아니다. 그리고 대권은 그 누구도 혼자의 힘으로 오를 수 없는 자리다. 그럼에도 불구하고 한동훈은 자신이 중심이 되어야 한다는 태도로 일관하고 있으며, 이로 인해 당내의 시너지 대신 불협화음이 커지고 있다.
정치는 연대이며, 통합이다. 특히 지금과 같은 위기 국면에서는 더욱 그러하다. 한동훈은 통합의 중심이 되어야 할 사람이지, 분열의 촉매가 되어선 안 된다. 하지만 현실은 정반대의 방향으로 흐르고 있다. 이대로 간다면, 그의 정치적 위상은 ‘차세대 지도자’에서 ‘기회를 놓친 야심가’로 전락할 위험이 크다.
한동훈의 과거 이력 또한 간과할 수 없다. 문재인 정부 시절 그는 윤석열의 핵심 실무 라인으로 활동하며, 소위 ‘적폐청산’의 최전선에서 날을 세웠다. ‘경제공동체’라는 해괴한 조어로 박근혜의 탄핵 논리를 만들었고, 이로 인해 천일이 넘는 수감생활과 보수 진영 전반에 걸친 타격이 이어졌다. 300명이 넘는 인사들이 법적 처벌을 받았고, 보수 세력은 지도부 공백이라는 심대한 타격을 입었다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 이 모든 과거에 대한 성찰이나 유감 표명 없이 보수 진영에 진입한 그의 현재 모습은 많은 이들에게 이중성과 기회주의의 인상을 남긴다.
게다가 2024년 총선의 참패는 정치 초보로서의 그의 민낯을 여실히 드러냈다. 전략적 사고와 현장 감각이 무엇인지조차 모른 채, ‘586 청산’이라는 전선 하나에 의존했고, 이재명 대표가 임종석을 공천 배제함으로써 그 전선이 붕괴된 뒤에도 대체 전략을 마련하지 못했다. 전국 유세 현장에서 셀카를 찍으며 다닌 그 모습은 정치가 아닌 연예 활동에 가까웠다. 선거는 전쟁이다. 병기를 빼앗긴 채로 전장에 나선 장수가 패배를 피할 수 없듯, 국민의힘의 패배는 이미 예고된 것이었다.
물론 한동훈은 여전히 재능 있는 정치인이다. 그의 언변은 날카롭고, 대중과의 교감 능력은 인상적이다. 어디에 내놓아도 손색없는 글로벌한 이미지 또한 그의 강점이다. 그러나 그러한 재능은 ‘공공의 리더십’으로 승화될 때 의미를 가진다. 지금의 한동훈은 그 재능을 ‘자기 정치’에 소비하고 있을 뿐, ‘우리 정치’의 구심으로 승화시키지 못하고 있다. 정치적 파트너와의 기싸움, 전략적 반성 없는 침묵, 내부 분열에 기인한 지도력 상실—이 모두는 ‘미완의 대권 주자’가 보일 수 있는 위험한 징후들이다.

이제는 결단의 시간이다. 자신의 입지를 잠시 내려놓고, 당과 후보를 위해 헌신하는 길만이 한동훈의 미래를 여는 열쇠가 될 것이다. 진정한 지도자는 자신의 타이밍을 조율할 줄 알고, 때로는 스스로 물러섬으로써 공동체를 전진시킨다. 지금 이 순간, 한동훈이 선택해야 할 길은 명확하다. 자신이 중심이 아니라, 당이 중심이 되는 구조 속에서 전폭적인 지원자, 그리고 통합의 설계자로 자리매김해야 한다.
그 결단은 단지 국민의힘의 승리를 위한 선택이 아니다. 그것은 한동훈 자신이 정치인으로서의 성숙함을 입증하는 유일한 길이며, 훗날 대한민국의 대통령이라는 더 큰 소명을 감당할 수 있는 진정한 지도자로 거듭나는 출발점이 될 것이다.jeongkeekim@naver.com

Han Dong-hoon, now is the time for ‘full dedication’ to win the presidential election!!

The current People Power Party is at a historical crossroads where it must risk everything to win the next presidential election. Re-creating the regime is not just a political task. It is a major test of whether the conservative camp will survive and, furthermore, protect the vision for the future of the Republic of Korea. At this very moment, Han Dong-hoon (former leader of the People Power Party) cannot remain a mere newcomer. Now, as a leader of the conservative camp, he must practice leadership that can unite the entire People Power Party and respond to the demands of the times.
Since entering politics, Han Dong-hoon has gained overwhelming recognition in a short period of time. His refined appearance, urbane sense, and refined language skills made him a ‘star of the conservative camp’ overnight, and the decisiveness and coolness he displayed during his time as a prosecutor left a strong impression on the public. In particular, politicians who are good at digital communication and know how to form contact with the younger generation are rare, so his presence was enough to be evaluated as a new generation center even within the conservative camp.
However, what is required at this point is not a ‘star politician’ but a ‘leader who leads the country’. Politics is not about image, but about direction, and the presidency is not about personal honor, but the future of the entire nation. In that respect, one clear question is posed to Han Dong-hoon. Is he currently on the path of ‘comprehensive dedication to the country and the party’? Or is he absorbed in political planning to enhance his position after the presidential election?
Unfortunately, his recent actions give off a strong impression of the latter. His attitude of protecting his political assets rather than uniting the party, and especially his attitude during the conflict with Kim Moon-soo, was closer to conditional negotiation than political dialogue. Politics is not something you do alone. And the presidency is a position that no one can ascend to alone. Nevertheless, Han Dong-hoon has consistently maintained the attitude that he must be the center, and this has led to growing discord rather than synergy within the party.
Politics is about solidarity and integration. This is especially true in times of crisis like the present. Han Dong-hoon should be the center of integration, not a catalyst for division. However, reality is flowing in the opposite direction. If things continue this way, his political status is at great risk of falling from a ‘next-generation leader’ to an ‘ambitious person who missed his chance.’
Han Dong-hoon’s past history cannot be overlooked either. During the Moon Jae-in administration, he worked as a key member of Yoon Seok-yeol’s working line and was at the forefront of the so-called ‘elimination of deep-rooted evils.’ He created the logic for Park Geun-hye’s impeachment with the bizarre term ‘economic community,’ which led to more than a thousand days in prison and a blow to the entire conservative camp. Over 300 people were legally punished, and the conservatives suffered a serious blow due to a leadership vacuum. Nevertheless, his current appearance, having entered the conservative camp without any reflection or regret about all this past, leaves many with the impression of duplicity and opportunism.
In addition, the crushing defeat in the 2024 general election clearly revealed his true colors as a political novice. Without even knowing what strategic thinking and field sense were, he relied on a single front called ‘liquidation of 586’, and even after that front collapsed when Representative Lee Jae-myung excluded Lim Jong-seok from the nomination, he failed to come up with an alternative strategy. His appearance taking selfies at campaign sites across the country was closer to entertainment activities than politics. Elections are wars. Just as a general who goes into battle without weapons cannot avoid defeat, the defeat of the People Power Party was already predicted.
Of course, Han Dong-hoon is still a talented politician. His speech is sharp, and his ability to communicate with the public is impressive. His global image, which is unrivaled no matter where he is put, is also his strength. However, such talent becomes meaningful when it is sublimated into ‘public leadership.’ The current Han Dong-hoon is only consuming his talent for ‘his own politics’ and is not able to sublimate it into the center of ‘our politics’. The fight with his political partner, the silence without strategic reflection, the loss of leadership due to internal division—all of these are dangerous signs that an ‘unfinished presidential candidate’ can show.
Now is the time to make a decision. Only by temporarily stepping down from his position and devoting himself to the party and candidate will Han Dong-hoon’s future be opened. A true leader knows how to adjust his timing and sometimes steps back to advance the community. At this moment, the path that Han Dong-hoon must choose is clear. He must establish himself as a full-fledged supporter and designer of unification in a structure where the party is the center, not himself.
That decision is not simply a choice for the victory of the People Power Party. It is the only way for Han Dong-hoon to prove his maturity as a politician, and it will be the starting point for him to become a true leader who can take on the greater calling of being the President of the Republic of Korea in the future. jeongkeekim@naver.com
