이완섭 서산시장이 지난 9일부터 15일까지 5박 7일간의 미국 출장을 성공적으로 마치고 귀국했다. 이번 출장을 통해 이 시장은 미국 켄터키주 엘리자베스타운시와 우호 교류 의향서를 교환하고, 시카고와 뉴욕 등지에서 문화예술 및 도시계획 분야의 선진 정책을 벤치마킹하며 서산시 발전을 위한 다양한 성과를 거두었다.
미국 현지 시각으로 11일, 엘리자베스타운 상공회의소에서 진행된 우호 교류 의향서 교환식에서 이 시장은 제프 그레고리 엘리자베스타운 시장과 만나 두 도시 간 주민 우호 증진 및 행정, 경제, 문화, 교육 등 다양한 분야에서의 교류 협력을 약속했다 이는 지난해부터 꾸준히 논의되어 온 결과다.
