브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 이재명 대통령은 77번째 제헌절을 맞은 17일 "제헌절을 특별히 기릴 필요가 있기 때문에 휴일로 정하는 방안을 한 번 검토해봤으면 좋겠다"고 밝혔다.
이재명 대통령은 이날 오후 용산 대통령실에서 주재한 수석보좌관회의에서 "제헌절은 헌법을 제정·공포된 날을 기념하는데, 소위 '절'(○○절)로 불리는 국가기념일 중에서 유일하게 휴일이 아닌 것 같다"며 이같이 말했다.
이 대통령은 "작년 12월 3일 군사쿠데타 사태를 겪으면서 우리 국민들은 그야말로 헌법이 정한 것처럼 주권자로서의 역할, 책임을 다해서 결국은 민주 헌정 질서를 회복했다"면서 "7월 17일 제헌절에 국민이 국가의 주인이라는 헌법 정신을, 국민주권 정신을 다시 되돌아보는 그런 좋은 계기로 만들면 어떨까 하는 생각"이라고 강조했다.
한편 제헌절은 1948년 7월 17일 대한민국 헌법 공포를 기념하기 위해 1949년 국경일로 지정된 뒤 1950년부터 공휴일로 운영돼왔다.
하지만 2005년 노무현 정부 시절 "공휴일이 너무 많아 기업 활동과 학교 수업일수가 부족하다"는 비판이 일었고, 2008년부터 제헌절을 법정 공휴일에서 제외했다.
이에 따라 제헌절은 3·1일절, 광복절, 개천절, 한글날 등과 더불어 5대 국경일로 분류되지만 유일하게 법정 휴일은 아닌 날이 됐다.
