철학(哲學)을 전공하는 철학자들에게는 자기만의 철학이 있다. 그러하듯 기자(記者)들에게도 자기만의 기자정신(記者精神)이 있다. 그러하다면, 기자에게 기자정신이란 무얼까? 과연 나(문일석)의 기자정신은 과연 무얼까?
나는 가끔씩 지난 52년 간, 기자로 살아왔다고 자랑 질 했다. 어떤 기자로 살아왔기에? 그런 자랑 질을 해대고 살았을까?
내가 나를 뒤돌아보면, 나는 비주류(非主流) 기자로 일관했다. 주요 일간신문, 또는 주요 방송이 아닌, 주간신문들의 언저리에서 살았다. 그 유명한 선데이 서울(서울신문 발행)에도 1년 여 간 취재해서 기사화된, 글을 썼었다. 1990년부터는 '토요신문' '일요서울' '주간현대' 등에서 편집국장-발행인으로, 변동없이 주간신문 쪽에서만 일을 해왔다.
평생 기자로서, 평생 기사-칼럼을 써온 것은 당연하다. 그 기간, 나의 기자정신은 무얼까? 남(다른 기자)이 가지지 않은 기자정신이 나에게 있었다. 민주주의-언론의 자유를 확장하는 게 나의 기자정신이었다.
한때 언론인이 대우받던 시대가 있었다. 이름 하여 '언론공화국' 시대. 이 때는 언론인들은 급여가 상위 수준이었다.
이에 대해, 언론인 오소백 선생(1921-1994)은 필자와 가진 인터뷰(일요서울 1994년 1월19일자)에서 “언론이 공정하고 기자들이 올바른 기자가 되려면 보수문제를 무시할 수는 없을 겁니다. 하지만 '월급을 많이 받는 기자는 다 좋은 기자다'라고 말할 수는 없습니다. 어떤 신문의 경우는 대기업 사원들 보다 월급이 많습니다. 그렇다고 다 일류기자이겠습니까?”라면서 “생활 수단은 수단일 뿐입니다. 보수에 관계없이 기자만을 천직으로 아는 기자들이 신문사의 주요 부서에 뿌리박고 있다면, 기자들이 물질주의에 빠져있다는 비판을 받지 않겠지요"라고 말했다.
언론환경은 크게 변했다. 그런 큰 변화 속에서도 나는 나만의 기자정신에 충실하려고 노력했다. 나는 타(他) 기자들이 쓰지 못하는 그런 류(類)의 기사들을 지속적으로 생산(生産)했다. 기사에도 창조적인 아이디어가 필수적으로, 꼭 들어간다. 나는 오직 나만이 쓸 수 있는 그런 기사-칼럼들을 지속적로 써댔다. 이게 나의 고집(固執)이요, 기자정신(記者情神)이었다. 그런 정신으로 썼던 기사-칼럼들, 내가 신문 발행인으로 지내왔던 '주간현대' '브레이크뉴스'에 가득 담겨있다.

Philosophers who major in philosophy have their own philosophies. Just like that, reporters also have their own journalistic spirits. So then, what does journalistic spirit mean to a reporter? What exactly is my (Moon Il-seok's) journalistic spirit?
I sometimes brag that I've lived as a reporter for the past 52 years. What kind of reporter have I been? Why did I live bragging like that?
When I look back on myself, I've consistently been a non-mainstream reporter. I've lived on the fringes of weekly newspapers, not major daily newspapers or major broadcasting stations. I also wrote articles that were published in the famous Sunday Seoul (published by Seoul Shinmun) after covering the story for about a year. Since 1990, I have worked only in the weekly newspaper sector as an editor-publisher at 'Saturday Shinmun', 'Sunday Seoul', and 'Weekly Hyundai'.
As a lifelong journalist, it is natural that I have written articles and columns my whole life. What was my journalistic spirit during that period? I had a journalistic spirit that others (other journalists) did not have. My journalistic spirit was to expand democracy and freedom of the press.
There was a time when journalists were treated well. It was called the 'Republic of the Press' era. At that time, journalists had high salaries.
Regarding this, in an interview with the author (Sunday Seoul, January 19, 1994), journalist Oh So-baek (1921-1994) said, “If the media is to be fair and journalists are to be good journalists, they cannot ignore the issue of compensation. However, we cannot say that ‘all journalists who receive high salaries are good journalists.’ In the case of some newspapers, they receive higher salaries than employees of large corporations. Does that mean they are all first-class journalists?” He added, “A means of living is just a means. If journalists who consider being a journalist as their only calling are rooted in the main departments of newspapers regardless of compensation, journalists will not be criticized for being materialistic.” The media environment has changed significantly. Even amidst such great change, I tried to remain true to my own journalistic spirit. I continued to produce articles of the kind that other journalists could not write. Creative ideas are essential and must be included in articles. I continued to write articles and columns that only I could write. This was my stubbornness and my journalistic spirit.
