지난 7월 31일 서울 중구에 위치한 농협중앙회 본관, 이곳을 찾은 인사는 베트남의 도 반 찌엔 조국전선중앙위원회 위원장이다. 한국국제교류재단의 초청으로 방한한 그는, 굳이 외교부가 아닌 농협중앙회를 가장 먼저 찾았다. 그 이유는 분명하다. 한국농협은 이미 베트남 사회에서 농업과 금융, 지역개발까지 다양한 영역에서 존재감을 키워온 핵심 파트너이기 때문이다.

일각에선 “과도한 글로벌화는 협동조합의 본질을 훼손할 수 있다”는 우려도 나온다. 하지만 강호동 회장의 행보는 ‘농협다움’을 포기하기보다, 그 개념을 시대에 맞게 확장하는 것으로 읽힌다. 그는 국내 농촌 현실에 기반한 사업 전략을 유지하면서도, 이를 국제무대로 옮기는 작업에 집중하고 있다.

On July 31st, Do Van Chien, Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnamese Fatherland Front, visited the Nonghyup Headquarters in Jung-gu, Seoul. Invited to Korea by the Korea Foundation, he made it a point to visit Nonghyup, not the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, first. The reason is clear: Nonghyup has already grown its presence as a key partner in various fields within Vietnamese society, including agriculture, finance, and regional development.
The meeting between Nonghyup Chairman Kang Ho-dong and Chairman Do Van Chien was more than a simple courtesy call. The two sides held in-depth discussions on strengthening practical cooperation and expanding the strategic partnership in the agricultural sector of both countries. Chairman Kang stated, "Vietnam is one of the countries Nonghyup is focusing on for cooperation," and expressed his intent to expand cooperation, noting that "currently, we operate seven offices for banking, trade, and securities, and we are also working on establishing a Ho Chi Minh branch in the future."
This is not a simple friendly exchange but part of Nonghyup's "Global Cooperative Strategy" that is accelerating under Chairman Kang Ho-dong's leadership.
Nonghyup's Expansion is Now Reaching Asia
While Nonghyup is Korea's largest agricultural cooperative, its identity is no longer "limited to domestic affairs." Since his inauguration, Chairman Kang has declared a "Global Nonghyup," listing the international expansion of cooperative values, as well as the expansion of agri-finance and agri-food distribution into overseas markets, as core tasks.
Among these, Vietnam is the most strategic partner country. With its strengthening economic ties to Korea, Vietnam can function as a "Southeast Asian hub" for agricultural exports, financial market entry, and expansion of distribution and logistics. Nonghyup has already laid the groundwork through local bank branches, agricultural material export businesses, and regional development cooperation projects. The meeting with Chairman Do Van Chien heralds a more advanced discussion built upon this foundation.
The "Ho Chi Minh branch establishment approval" mentioned by Chairman Kang is not just the addition of a new branch but a symbol of Nonghyup Financial Group's expanding Asia strategy. Nonghyup Bank is already growing its financial network in places like Myanmar, China, and Vietnam. These regions can serve as hubs for future agricultural product exports and as connection points for distribution infrastructure.
What's interesting is that this meeting was initiated by Nonghyup, not the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy. Nonghyup is not just a distribution and financial corporation; it is a cooperative with the mission of "the life of farmers and the survival of local communities," so its international cooperation is also based on this ideology.
The Vietnamese Fatherland Front is similar to a civil society solidarity organization in Korea and has a significant impact on regional and rural development. Chairman Do Van Chien's comment that "Nonghyup Korea has been a long-time partner of Vietnam, contributing to the development of local communities" is in this context. The core of the exchange was not just economic but the value of "coexistence of rural communities."
Chairman Kang also mentioned "expanding Nonghyup's agri-food exports" at the meeting. This aims to connect with the interests of its core producers, the cooperative members, encompassing a triple objective: expanding export channels, increasing farmers' income, and enhancing the value of the national agricultural brand.
"Kang Ho-dong Leadership" and Nonghyup's Future Map
Chairman Kang's actions are both deliberate and clear in their direction. Since his inauguration, he has been restructuring Nonghyup into a platform that is: field-oriented, globally networked, and a fusion of agriculture and finance. By simultaneously pushing for new businesses based on finance, distribution, and ICT, along with overseas expansion, he is attempting to "redefine Nonghyup" by breaking out of the traditional cooperative shell.
Cooperation with Vietnam goes beyond simple trade or branch openings. Various joint projects are possible, such as local agricultural technology cooperation, youth farmer training programs, joint farm machinery businesses, and smart farm exports. If Nonghyup's organizational strength, Korea's agricultural technology, and Vietnam's growth potential align, the creation of a "K-agriculture ecosystem" in the Southeast Asian market could become a reality.
Some have voiced concerns that "excessive globalization could compromise the essence of the cooperative." However, Chairman Kang's actions can be interpreted as expanding the concept of "Nonghyup-ness" to fit the times rather than abandoning it. He is focused on transferring business strategies based on the reality of domestic rural communities to the international stage.
The meeting with Chairman Do Van Chien is particularly symbolic. It positions Nonghyup as a partner that considers not only farmers but also the nation, society, and the shared lives of humanity as a whole.
Nonghyup Korea is now fully embarking on a global strategy. This is not just about entering new markets; it is also about exporting Nonghyup's unique values of "cooperation," "coexistence," and "mutual growth." Chairman Kang's leadership is seen as an experiment to expand the future ecosystem of agriculture, not just business.
Strengthening the strategic partnership with Vietnam is just the first step. Will Nonghyup be able to continue its new attempts to simultaneously realize "farmer-centric" and "global values" on a wider stage and in more complex ways?
