포항시에 따르면 포항야구장은 지난해 국토교통부가 전국 13개 프로야구장을 대상으로 실시한 합동 안전점검에서 유일하게 양호 판정을 받았다.
이번 결과는 타 구장에서 발생한 안전사고 이후 포항시가 선제적으로 특별점검을 실시하고 노후시설 보수 등 지속적인 관리에 나선 성과로 평가된다. 실제 점검에서는 외부 부착물, 관람석 구조물, 유지관리 이력 등 14개 전 평가 항목에서 ‘미흡’ 사항이 단 한 건도 발견되지 않았다.
포항시는 안전성 확보와 함께 관람객 편의 향상을 위한 시설 개선에도 나서고 있다. 시는 사업비 20억 원을 투입해 설치 14년이 지난 노후 전광판을 최신형으로 교체 중이다.
이번 교체는 경기 중 비디오 판독 상황에서 발생했던 영상·음성 송출 오류 등 관람객 불편을 해소하기 위해 추진됐다. 새롭게 도입되는 전광판은 고해상도 화질을 통해 경기 상황과 판독 장면을 보다 선명하게 제공할 것으로 기대된다.
교체 작업은 다음 달 초 마무리될 예정이며, 시범 운영을 거쳐 다음 달 19일부터 열리는 삼성 라이온즈와 KT 위즈의 3연전부터 본격 가동된다.
포항시 관계자는 “전국에서 가장 안전한 구장으로 인정받은 만큼 이에 걸맞은 관람 환경을 제공하는 것이 팬들에 대한 예우”라며 “앞으로도 철저한 안전 관리와 지속적인 시설 개선으로 쾌적하고 안전한 야구 관람 환경을 조성하겠다”고 말했다.
