삶이란, 굴곡의 연속이다. 필자가 알고 지내는 지인이신 심민섭 시사만화가님은 나에게 ‘굴곡’이라는 글씨를 써서 선물해줬다. 나의 인생을 지켜본 결과물인 듯하다.
시사만화가 심민섭 화백께서 직접 쓴 “시사 만화쟁이의 자전적 정치수필, 굴곡(屈曲)<49회>”에는 다음과 같은 인생사가 기록돼 있다. 내용이 길다. 하지만, 이 분의 육성(肉聲)이 고스란히 담겨 있어, 그대로 옮기는 게 예의 일듯하다.
“내가 1980년대 초 택시운전하면서 버는 돈이 하루에 5천원이었다. 하루 일하고 하루 쉬니 실제는 하루에 2천5백원 번꼴이다. 한 달에 8만원도 안됐다. 이유는 간단하다. 승차 거부 못 하고 합승을 못 했기 때문이다. 정직하게 운전하고는 도저히 먹고 살 수가 없었다. 친척집 결혼식에 3천원 부조했더니 그게 온 집안에 소문이 나버렸다. 3천원이면 하루벌이가 넘는다. 어떤 때는 한 숨 못자고 48시간 연속 일할 때도 있었다. 택시 운전하며 악만 남았다. 교통경찰한테 돈 뜯기지(악마 같았다)손님들 횡포 또한 만만치 않다. 택시기사는 승객 때문에 먹고 사는데 승객들을 원수처럼 생각한다. 반면에 승객들은 택시기사의 횡포에 사람으로 보지 않는다. 이게 우리 사회의 악순환이다. 국민성의 최대 약점인 배려심의 부족이다. 택시기사로서의 설움이 얼마나 컸던지, 내가 택시 승객으로 탈 때는 택시요금 웃돈을 항상 더 준다. 나는 힘없는 노동자의 처절한 쓴맛을 뼛속 깊이 체험한 사람이다. 그래서 전태일 노동열사는 그걸 분노하며 분신 자살 했고, 나는 팔자려니 하고 체념 순응한다. 그게 전태일과 나의 차이점이다. 나는 고졸 학력이다. 그래서 택시 운전을 했다. 아버지의 정치바람으로 인해 온 재산이 거덜 나서, 모든 걸 포기해야만 했다. 고 1 때는 전교 수석이었음에도 학업 포기하고 교복 입은 채 신문팔이를 했다. 공부 욕심이 어느 정도인가 하면, 선생님이 교육에 게을리 하면 교장선생한테 투서까지 했다. 종로거리 청계천을 누비며 석간 신문팔이를 했다. 남의 구역 침범했다고 두들겨 맞기도 했다. 나는 아버지를 원망했다. 인문학이 강하던 시절, 나는 염세에 빠져 약 먹고 음독한다. 약 먹고 신음할 때, 차길진 법사라는 친구가 발견하고 세브란스 병원으로 옮긴다. 나는 이틀 만에 깨어난다. 그 후유증으로 지금까지 고생한다. 차길진 법사 왈, 꿈속에서 네 할아버지 나타나시더니, 민섭이가 위험하니 빨리 가봐라, 이래서 왔단다. 구명시식의 대가로 이름 난 차길진 법사는 대한민국 정-관계 언론계에서 알 만한 사람은 다 안다. 언론계 유력인사가 후원회 회장을 할 정도이다. 아키히토 일왕 앞에서 손자 낳게 해준다고 굿을 한 사람이다. 차차 얘기하겠다. 한국일보 장기영 창업주는 선린상고 나오고 3공화국 경제부총리까지 지냈다. 그의 파격적인 사고는 한국일보 기자 뽑는데, 학력 제한이 고졸 이상이다. 고졸이어도 실력이 있으면 기자가 될 수 있다. 이래저래 한국일보와 인연이다. 문공부에서 내게 이런 주문이 있었다. 고졸로서 대성의 길, 전국 순회강연 가능할까요? 되게 쑥스러워 완곡히 거절했다.”
이 분의 인생 스토리를 읽어보아도, 인생이란? '굴곡'이 심한 듯하다.

필자는 지난 2023년 6월16일 페이스북에 올린 “역대 대통령들을 주물럭거린 만화가 심민섭 선생..."인사동에서 대화하다!" 제목의 글에서 ”2023년 6월16일 점심 때, 서울 종로구 인사동에서 심민섭 만화가 선생님을 만났다. 강원도 홍천에서 사시는데, 필자를 만나러 일부러 나오셨다. 필자는 대 예언가 차길진 법사(1947-2019)와 친한 관계를 유지했었다. 그 분의 친구 분이라, 오래 동안 알고 지낸 분이다. 젊었을 때, 자살하려 수면제를 먹었는데, 예언가 친구(고등학교 동창)인 차길진 법사가 찾아와 병원으로 이송, 구명해줬다고 한다. 필자는 이날 심민섭 선생과 차길진 법사의 이야기로, 긴 시간을 보냈다. 이 분은 뛰어난 비판력을 지니신 분이다. 하지만, '택시운전 5년 경력'을 자랑스러워하신 분이다. 인생에서 제1로 내세우는 경력이다. 한국일보에서 만화가로 일하기 시작한 후, 일간스포츠-서울경제-세계일보-국민일보-대전일보에서 만화가로 근무했다. 평생, 만화가로 사셨다. 아동만화도 500여 권이나 그렸다. 만화가 시절, 만화가로서 전두환-노태우-김영삼-김대중-노무현-이명박-박근혜 전 대통령들을 주물럭거리며 살았다. 촌철살인의 필력을 구사한 분이다. 이 때문에, 늘 국가의 정보기관에 감시 당 했다. 은퇴하신 후 강원도 홍천의 홍천강 가에 대저택(?)을 구입, 농촌생활을 하신다. 열심히 정원도 가꾸며 산다. 그뿐 아니라 마을의 노인회장에 당선, 1948년생으로서 '노후 권력(?)'까지 맘껏 누리신다. 부럽다~ "인생을 살아보니, 운명대로 사는 거 같아요. 난 운명론자입니다. 회고해보니, 내 인생은 굴곡이 많았던 인생길이었어요."
산은 봉우리가 높고 많으면 골짜기가 깊고 많다. 그 만큼 굴곡이 많기 때문이다. 사람의 삶도 굴곡이 많으면 힘든 삶이랄 수 있다. 심민섭 화백님이 나에게 써준, ‘굴곡’이란 글씨를 자주자주 바라보면서, 나의 인생을 반추해본다. 나는 가난한 농촌 마을에서 태어나, 기자-신문사 편집국장-신문사 발행인-언론사 사주(社主)로서 긴 기간(52년)을 보냈다. 뒤돌아보면, 나의 인생 역시 '굴곡(屈曲)'이 많은 인생이었다. moonilsuk@naver.com
