○ 아미쉬 공동체의 교훈
2006년 미국 펜실베이니아에서 아미쉬 공동체(Amish Community) 초등학교에 한 남성이 난입해 어린 학생들을 총으로 쏘아 다섯 명이 숨지고 본인도 자살했다. 그러나 전 세계를 충격에 빠뜨린 것은 아미쉬 사람들의 선택이었다. 그들은 살인자의 장례식에 참석했고, 남겨진 가족을 돌보며 '우리는 그를 용서한다'고 선언했다. 공동체가 분노에 휩싸여 무너질 수 있었지만, 피해자의 용서(Forgiveness)와 가해자의 회개(Repentance), 그 결과 따라온 화해(Reconciliation)가 공동체를 지켜냈다.
한국 정치권은 아미쉬 공동체가 보여준 용서와 화해의 교훈을 외면했다. 국회는 지금 용서 없는 오만과 회개 없는 아집이 지배하는 공간으로 전락했고, 그 결과 화해의 자리는 존재하지 않는다.
윤석열 전 대통령 탄핵 이후 민주당은 특검을 앞세워 국민의힘을 내란당으로 몰아세우며 정치적 몰살을 시도한다. 이에 맞서는 국민의힘은 무지하고 무능하며 무력하다. 사실 국민의힘은 탄핵의 적법성은 인정하되, 내란죄 성립은 불가함을 법리로 반박하는 전략을 택했어야 했다. 그러나 적절한 반격 논리를 마련하지 못한 채 허둥대고 있다.
이처럼 여야가 끝없는 정쟁에 매몰된 사이, 국민의 삶은 정치의 도구로 전락했고, 대한민국의 미래는 끝없는 보복과 분열의 악순환에 갇혀 있다.
정치는 권력을 쥐는 것이 아니라, 공동체를 지키고 미래를 준비하는 일이다. 그러나 여야 지도부 모두 당리당략과 진영의 이익에만 몰두하고 있다. 매일같이 이어지는 고소와 고발, 국회의 몸싸움, 언론 플레이는 국민을 절망으로 몰아넣는다. 이대로라면 대한민국은 정치가 아니라 전쟁터에서 스스로 무너질 것이다.
지금 필요한 것은 미움의 언어가 아니라, 회개와 용서로 이끌어낸 화해의 정치다. 여야가 끝내 이를 거부한다면, 역사는 지금의 정치인들을 공동체를 파괴한 세대로 기록할 것이다. 국민이 원하는 것은 정쟁이 아니라, 책임 있는 지도자들의 화해와 협력이다.
여야 정치인들이여!! 지금의 증오 정치가 공동체를 구하는가, 아니면 파괴하는가. 국민 앞에 스스로의 얼굴을 비추어 보라.
○ 협력의 기억과 탄핵의 그림자
정치는 공동체를 지키는 예술이다. 미국은 9·11 직후 초당적 협력으로 안보 법안을 처리했고, 독일은 대연정(大聯政)을 통해 위기를 넘겼으며, 남아공의 만델라는 복수 대신 화해를 택해 내전을 막았다.
우리 정치의 역사 속에서 순간의 지혜는 위기의 국면을 뚫고 나가는 힘이 되었다. 1987년 대통령 직선제 개헌은 독재와 민주화의 갈림길에서 국민적 합의를 이끌어낸 결단이었고, 1990년 3당 합당은 분열된 정국을 재편해 안정적 국정을 가능케 했다. 1995년 신한국당과 꼬마 민주당의 합당, 1997년 DJP 연합 역시 불완전했지만 분열을 수습하고 국가의 위기를 돌파하려는 정치적 선택이었다. 이처럼 정치가 때로는 파괴가 아니라 통합의 도구였음을 우리는 기억한다.
그러나 지금의 정치인들에게서는 그 정신을 찾아볼 수 없다. 화해의 의지 대신 증오의 언어가 넘치고, 국가의 미래보다 탐욕의 이익을 좇으며, 지도자의 무게를 지닌 인물이 아니라 정파의 이익만을 따르는 정치꾼의 그림자만 남아 있다.
