“초기 스마트팜 시장에 참여한 업체는 배관설비 업체, LED사업 업체, 비닐하우스 경영농업 법인 등 일부 부분적인 기술을 가진 업체들이 주도했습니다. 정부와 지자체도 전문성을 갖추지 못한 채 불완전한 형태의 스마트팜을 지원하는 수준이었지요.”
그는 이어서 강조했다.
“상추 같은 엽채소류는 물만 잘 순환되어도 큰 문제가 없지만, 딸기나 인삼 같은 작물은 고도의 전문성이 필요합니다. 결국 한계가 드러났고, 최근에는 AI 기술이 접목된 첨단 스마트팜 기술과 전문성이 요구되는 상황입니다.”

실제로 인류가 당면한 21세기 최대 도전은 식량 위기다. 인구는 빠르게 증가하고 있지만, 다른 종은 멸종 위기에 몰리고 있다. 기후변화와 자원 고갈은 농업의 안정성을 흔들고 있으며, 식량이 국제정치의 무기가 되는 사례도 늘고 있다. 식량은 단순한 생존 문제가 아니라 국가 안보의 핵심 자원으로 부상했다.
이런 위기 속에서 대안으로 떠오른 것이 바로 스마트팜이다. IoT, 빅데이터, 인공지능을 기반으로 온도, 습도, 빛, 영양분을 정밀하게 제어해 농작물을 생산하는 스마트팜은 혹독한 환경에서도 안정적인 식량 확보를 가능하게 한다. 실제로 남극 기지에서는 스마트팜으로 신선한 채소를 길러 연구원들이 직접 섭취하고 있으며, 이는 향후 우주 탐사와 화성 거주 계획에서도 핵심 기술이 될 것이다.
국내에서도 스마트팜 혁신은 이어지고 있다. 대전척수장애인협회와 도로공사는 유휴 터널을 활용해 스마트팜을 설치하는 사업을 추진 중이다. 황경아 대전시의회 부의장의 기획으로 출발한 이 사업에는 ㈜그린팜이 참여했다.
그린팜은 한국핵융합에너지연구원이 개발한 대기 중 질소를 직접 비료로 전환하는 장치를 상용화하며, 첫 적용을 스마트팜에 나설 계획이다. 특히 딸기재배에 특화된 기술을 보유하고 있어 동남아 국가와 유럽의 많은 나라들이 기술을 이전받기 위해 앞 다투어 초빙하고 있으며 최근에는 인도네시아 정부의 요청을 받아 대형 스마트팜을 설치하여 국빈 대우를 받고 있다고 한다.

아직 제도적 걸림돌이 존재하고 있다. 과거 정부와 지자체는 전문성 부족에도 불구하고 기존 업체에만 실적을 이유로 기회를 주며 신기술 기업의 참여를 제한하는 사례가 있었다.
다행히 최근 정부는 공직자의 창의적 판단을 위축 시켜온 감사원법을 개정하겠다고 밝혀, 앞으로는 합리적이고 혁신적인 기업들이 자유롭게 참여할 수 있는 길이 열릴 것으로 기대된다.
스마트팜은 더 이상 선택이 아니다. 그것은 인류의 생존을 위한 필연적 기술이며, 지속가능한 농업의 미래다. 첨단 기술과 창의적 경영, 그리고 열린 정책 지원이 함께할 때, 스마트팜은 진정한 ‘생명의 농장’으로 자리 잡을 것이다.
