이재명 대통령이 24일(현지시간) "AI(인공지능)란 도구를 어떻게 다룰 건지에 따라 우리 앞엔 전혀 다른 미래가 펼쳐지게 될 것"이라고 말했다.
제80차 유엔 총회에 참석한 이 대통령은 이날 오후 미국 뉴욕 유엔 본부에서 'AI·국제평화·안보' 주제로 열린 안전보장이사회 공개 토의에서 국별 발언을 통해 제프리 힌튼 교수가 AI를 '새끼 호랑이'에 비유한 것을 인용 후 'AI의 책임있는 이용'을 강조하며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 "AI를 잘 활용한다면 저성장·고물가 같은 난제를 해결해 새로운 번영의 길을 열어내고 의료·식량·교육 등 여러 문제에 해답을 줄 수도 있다"며 "변화에 대비 못한 채 끌려간다면 극심한 기술 격차가 철의 장막을 능가하는 실리콘 장막으로 작동해 전 세계적 불평등·불균형을 심화시킬 것"이라고 봤다.
또 "명암이 공존하는 AI시대 변화를 기회로 만들 방법은 국제사회가 단합해 책임있는 이용 원칙을 바로 세우는 것뿐"이라며 "과거 러다이트 운동(기계파괴 운동)처럼 기술 발전을 역행시키는 일은 가능하지 않고 현실적이지도 않으며다 유일하고 현명한 대처는 국익을 위해 경쟁하되 모두 이익을 위해 협력하는 것"이라고 했다.
이어 "각국 정부·학계·산업계·시민사회가 머리 맞대고 지혜를 모아야 모두를 위한 AI 인간 중심 포용적 AI로의 혁신을 이뤄낼 수 있다"며 "특히 안보리 역할·책임이 막중하다"고 했다.
더불어 "안보리는 그간 테러리즘·사이버 공격·팬데믹 같은 진화하는 위협에 적극 대처하며 국제사회 방향·비전을 제시해 왔다"며 "이제 AI시대에 변화한 안보 환경을 분석하고 공동 대응 방안을 찾아내야 한다"고 했다.
이 대통령은 "우리 앞에 주어진 새로운 시대적 사명을 마다하지 말자"며 "AI가 가져올 변화를 인류가 재도약할 발판으로 만들어내자"고 덧붙였다.
