도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 7일(현지시간) 민주당 성향 연방 정부 셧 다운(일시적 업무정지) 사태 관련해 "민주당은 통제 불능으로 지도자가 없고 누가 지도자인지 모르며 의도적으로 셧 다운을 지속하고 있다"고 밝혔다.
영국 '로이터 통신'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 워싱톤 DC 백악관에서 열린 마크 카니 캐나다 총리와의 정상회담에서 '셧 다운 중단을 위한 미 연방 상원의 단기지출법안(임시예산안·CR) 재 표결에 앞서 민주당에 전할 메시지가 있는가'란 취재진 질의에 "(셧 다운은) 그들(민주당)이 시작한 것으로 거의 가미카제(태평양 전쟁 당시 일본 자폭 특공대) 같은 공격"이라며 이같이 전했다.
그러면서 "그들(민주당)은 잃을 게 없으며 대통령 선거에서 압도적으로 졌다"며 연방 하원의원 재스민 크로켓(텍사스)·알렉산드리아 오카시오 코르테즈(뉴욕)·낸시 펠로시(캘리포니아)·연방 상원 원내대표 척 슈머(뉴욕) 등 민주당 인사들을 향해 "지능이 낮고 누구와 맞붙어도 선거에서 이기지 못할 것"이라고 했다.
또 셧 다운 지속 시 일부 연방 정부 프로그램 영구 폐지 경고에 대해선 "많이 있으며 곧 발표할 것"이라며 "그들(민주당)이 큰 실수를 저질렀다 생각하는데 셧 다운 때문에 수십억불 낭비·사기·남용을 제거할 수 있게 됐으며 그들이 은쟁반에 담아 건네준 것"이라고 했다.
이어 연방 공무원 영구 해고 시도 관련해 "4∼5일 후 말해줄 수 있을 것"이라며 "셧 다운이 계속되면 상당할 것이며 많은 일자리가 영원히 복원되지 않을 것"이라고 했다.
더불어 셧 다운 상황에서 무급 휴직 상태 공무원들 급여가 셧 다운 종료 후 소급 지급될지 여부에 대해 "(해당 공무원이) 누구인지 따라 다르다"며 "정말 우리가 책임져야 할 자격 없는 사람들도 있는데 그들에겐 다른 방식으로 할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
트럼프 대통령은 급여 소급 지급을 하지 않는 이유 관련해선 "민주당에 그 질문 하라"며 "나는 법을 따르며 법이 정한 게 옳다"고 답했다.
또 일리노이주 시카고·오리건주 포틀랜드 범죄 척결을 위해 주 방위군 등 병력 배치를 위한 '내란법' 발동 가능성 여부에 대해 "예전에도 발동된 적 있었다"며 "위대한 나라를 만들려면 범죄가 없어야 하며 주지사가 해결 못하면 우리가 해결할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
