유한양행이 몽골 현지에서 산림 복원 사업을 출범하며 지속가능한 지구 환경 보전을 위한 글로벌 ESG 경영 강화에 나섰다.
유한양행(대표 조욱제)은 9월 30일 몽골 바트숨베르(Batsumber) 지역의 몽골국립대학교 연습림 관리소에서 ‘몽골 숲 조성 사업’ 런칭 세레머니를 열고 본격적인 산불 피해지 복원 사업에 착수했다고 밝혔다.
이번 행사는 지난 9월 8일 서울에서 체결된 몽골 정부·아시아산림협력기구(AFoCO)·현지 NGO ‘빌리언트리스(Billion Trees)’와의 업무협약(MOU) 후속 조치로 마련된 것이다.
론칭 행사에는 조민철 유한양행 ESG경영실장을 비롯해 박종호 AFoCO 사무총장, 강호덕 산림청 사막화방지연구사업단장(동국대 바이오시스템대학장), 바트후 몽골 대통령 자문위원 등 양국 관계자와 환경단체, 지역 주민들이 참석했다. 민간기업과 국제기구, 정부가 함께 참여한 이번 출범식은 국경을 초월한 환경협력의 상징적인 자리로 평가됐다.
행사에 앞서 유한양행은 몽골 환경기후변화부와 면담을 갖고 산림 복원과 기후위기 대응을 위한 협력 방안을 논의했다. 회사는 앞으로 몽골국립대학교와 협력해 현지 토양조사 및 생태 분석을 기반으로 적합한 활엽수종을 선정하고, 체계적인 복원 계획을 추진할 예정이다. 단순한 조림사업이 아닌, 과학적 조사와 지역사회 참여를 결합한 지속가능한 산림 관리 체계 구축이 핵심 목표다.
이번 사업은 몽골 내 심화되는 사막화 문제에 대응하는 동시에, 산불 피해지를 복원하고 생태계를 회복시키는 글로벌 환경 프로젝트로 추진된다. 현지 주민이 직접 조림과 관리에 참여하도록 함으로써 장기적이고 실질적인 산림 관리 기반을 마련하는 것이 특징이다. 이를 통해 민간기업과 정부, 국제기구가 협력하는 새로운 형태의 글로벌 ESG 실천 모델로 자리 잡을 것으로 기대된다.
조민철 유한양행 ESG경영실장은 “몽골 숲 조성 사업은 기업의 사회적 책임을 국경 밖으로 확장하는 실질적 ESG 경영 사례”라며 “창립 100주년을 앞둔 유한양행은 앞으로도 몽골 정부와 국제기구, 시민단체와 협력해 지속가능한 지구 환경 조성을 위한 실천적 역할을 이어가겠다”고 말했다.
한편, 유한양행은 국내에서도 오창 미호강 생물다양성 증진, 1사 1숲 가꾸기, 노을공원 나무심기 등 다양한 생태계 보전 활동을 꾸준히 이어오고 있다. 회사는 이번 몽골 숲 조성 사업을 계기로 ESG 활동을 국내에서 글로벌 차원으로 확장하며, 환경과 사회적 책임을 아우르는 지속가능경영을 강화한다는 방침이다.
Yuhan Corporation Officially Launches ‘Batsumber Forest Creation Project’ in Mongolia

Yuhan Corporation has launched a forest restoration project in Mongolia, stepping up its global ESG management commitment to the sustainable preservation of the global environment.
Yuhan Corporation (CEO Cho Wook-je) announced that it officially commenced the restoration of wildfire-damaged areas after holding a launch ceremony for the ‘Mongolia Forest Creation Project’ at the Mongolian National University Training Forest Management Office in the Batsumber region of Mongolia on September 30.
The event was organized as a follow-up measure to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in Seoul on September 8 with the Mongolian government, the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO), and the local NGO ‘Billion Trees.’
The launch ceremony was attended by key officials, including Cho Min-chul (Head of Yuhan Corporation's ESG Management Office), Park Jong-ho (Secretary General of AFoCO), Kang Ho-deok (Head of the Korea Forest Service's Desertification Prevention Research Project Team and Dean of Dongguk University's College of Biosystems), Batkhuu (Advisory Member to the President of Mongolia), as well as representatives from environmental organizations and local residents. This launching ceremony, involving a private company, an international organization, and a government, was hailed as a symbolic occasion for transnational environmental cooperation.
Prior to the ceremony, Yuhan Corporation met with the Mongolian Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to discuss cooperation strategies for forest restoration and climate change response. The company plans to collaborate with the Mongolian National University to select appropriate broadleaf species based on local soil surveys and ecological analysis, and to implement a systematic restoration plan. The core objective is not merely a simple afforestation project but the establishment of a sustainable forest management system that combines scientific investigation with community participation.
This project is being promoted as a global environmental effort to simultaneously address the worsening issue of desertification in Mongolia, restore wildfire-damaged areas, and regenerate the ecosystem. It is characterized by the direct involvement of local residents in afforestation and management, thereby establishing a long-term and practical foundation for forest stewardship. Through this, it is expected to become a new model for global ESG practice involving collaboration among a private corporation, government, and an international organization.

As we approach our 100th anniversary, Yuhan Corporation will continue its practical role in creating a sustainable global environment by cooperating with the Mongolian government, international organizations, and civil society groups.”
Meanwhile, Yuhan Corporation has consistently pursued various ecosystem conservation activities domestically, including enhancing biodiversity in the Mihogang River in Ochang, participating in the 'One Company, One Forest Care' initiative, and tree planting at Noeul Park. With the Mongolia Forest Creation Project as a catalyst, the company plans to expand its ESG activities from a domestic to a global level, strengthening its sustainable management encompassing both environmental and social responsibility.
