브레이크뉴스 정민우 기자= 삼성전자와 삼성물산이 증상이 없는 사람의 혈액 채취만으로 암을 조기 진단하는 미국 생명공학 기업 ‘그레일(Grail)’에 1억1000만불을 투자한다고 16일(현지시간) 밝혔다.
그레일은 혈액 내 수억 개의 DNA 조각 중 암과 연관된 미세한 DNA 조각을 최적으로 선별하고, 이를 AI 기반 유전체(Genome) 데이터 기술로 분석해 암 발병 유무 뿐 아니라, 암이 발생한 장기 위치까지 예측할 수 있는 기술을 보유한 업체다.
다양한 임상시험 결과로 출시한 제품 ‘갤러리(Galleri)’는 단 한 번의 혈액검사로 50여 종의 암을 조기에 발견할 수 있다. 2021년 출시 이후 현재까지 약 40만건의 누적 검사 실적을 보유하고 있으며, 영국에서도 국립보건서비스(NHS)와 함께 대규모 임상을 진행하고 있다.
갤러리 검사를 활용하면 췌장암, 난소암 등 표준화된 선별 검사가 없는 암을 조기에 발견할 가능성이 높아 암 치료의 부담을 줄여줄 것으로 예상된다. 그레일은 자사의 갤러리 검사를 내년 중 미국 FDA에 승인 신청할 계획이다.
삼성물산은 이번 투자를 통해 한국에서 갤러리 검사를 독점 유통할 수 있는 권리를 확보했으며, 향후 싱가폴, 일본 등에서도 그레일과 협력할 예정이다.
삼성전자는 그레일의 기술력과 축적된 유전자 기반 암 조기진단 데이터를 삼성 헬스 플랫폼과 연계해 활용하는 전략적 협력을 모색할 예정이다. 이를 통해 삼성 헬스 사용자에게 보다 혁신적인 건강 관리 경험을 제공할 계획이다.

한편, 삼성물산은 삼성바이오로직스, 삼성바이오에피스와 공동으로 출자한 라이프 사이언스 펀드를 통해 미국의 혈액 기반 알츠하이머 검사 기술 기업 ‘C2N’과, 미국 플래그십 파이오니어링 8호 펀드 등에 투자한 바 있다.
삼성전자는 헬스케어 분야 강화를 위해 미국 DNA 분석 장비 기업인 ‘엘리먼트 바이오사이언스’에 투자를 진행했고, 최근에는 미국 디지털 헬스케어 회사 ‘젤스(Xealth)’를 인수한 바 있다.
