들녘이 황금빛으로 물드는 계절, 황산벌의 가을은 그 자체로 한 폭의 수채화다. 아침이면 마을 어귀에 얇은 안개가 내려앉고, 논두렁길을 따라 걷는 발끝에선 이삭이 여문 냄새가 코끝을 스친다.
감나무 가지마다 주황빛 열매가 달려 있고, 총총히 맺힌 열매에 늘어진 대추나무에 마음도 가득하다. 마을 어르신들의 손끝에서는 곡식과 함께 한 해의 노고가 수확된다.
도시에서는 쉽게 느낄 수 없는 ‘느림의 시간’이 이곳엔 있다. 하루의 속도가 다르고, 마음의 박자도 다르다. 바쁜 일상에 지쳐 메말랐던 마음이 이곳에서는 조금씩 풀린다. 볏짚을 태우는 연기 냄새조차 그리운 추억처럼 따뜻하다.
황산벌의 가을은 단지 곡식이 여무는 계절이 아니다. 인간의 마음이 여물어가는 시간이다. 자연이 주는 풍요로움 속에서 우리는 비로소 ‘충만함’이란 감정을 배운다. 손에 쥔 것은 많지 않아도, 마음 한켠이 따뜻하게 차오른다.

연산역 앞 광장에서 펼쳐지는 대추 축제가 한창이다. 풍요에 안도하고 여미는 풍물놀이에 멋진 동네친구 강교석이 취타대 복장으로 하늘과 땅 바람에 얽힌 풍물을 연주하고 있어 손을 흔들며 아는 체한다.
지금 축제장에 자연이 주는 풍요에 취한 인간의 원초적 모습은 자연과 동화되어 교감하는 행위로 들녘의 풍경과 함께 한 폭의 그림으로 각인되어진다. 자연과 이어질 때 인간의 모습이 가장 아름다워질 수가 있다. 그래서 웃고 떠드는 모습이 이질적이지 않다.
축제장에는 들썩임만 있는 것이 아니라 문화창고 전시장에서 빈센트 반 고흐, 폴 세잔, 폴 고갱, 앙리 루소, 폴 시냐크 등 다섯 개의 팔레트라는 주제로 후기 인상주의 거장들의 전시회가 열려 차분히 내면의 풍요와 설레임을 채워준다.
루소가 꿈꾸어낸 환상의 숲, 세잔이 구축한 형태의 질서, 고갱이 탐구한 원시적 상징, 고흐가 그려낸 내면의 불꽃, 시냐크가 빛으로 완성한 점의 울림. 다섯 개의 팔레트는 서로 다른 색을 지녔지만, 함께 모여 감정과 자연, 인간의 내면을 새롭게 해석한 후기 인상주의의 또 다른 얼굴을 보여준다는 설명을 보며 시골 특유에 자연과 어우러진 전시회의 풍요로움을 만끽할 수 있다.
