브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 경주 아시아태평양경제협력체(APEC) 정상회의 주간이 개막한 가운데 정동영 통일부 장관이 북미 간 대화 재개를 촉구했다.
정 장관은 27일 정부서울청사에서 부호 주한 베트남대사를 접견한 자리에서 "북미 정상 간 하노이에서 못다 이룬 협상이 다시 이어지기를 간절히 희망한다"고 밝혔다.
그는 "베트남은 한국인들이 가장 선호하는 여행지 중 하나이자, 하노이 북미 정상회담을 통해 한반도 평화의 상징적인 장소로 기억되고 있다"고 말했다.
앞서 북미 정상회담은 2019년 2월 27~28일 베트남 하노이에서 열렸다. 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령과 김정은 북한 국무위원장이 만난 두 번째 북미 정상회담이었다. 이 자리에선 비핵화와 제재 완화 문제를 논의했지만 합의문 없이 결렬(노딜 회담)됐다.
정 장관은 앞선 하노이 회담에 대해 "실패라기보다는 ‘노딜(No deal)’이 아니라 ‘워크 어웨이(Walk away)’, 즉 ‘걸어나왔다’는 표현이 더 적절하다"며 "언제든 다시 걸어 들어가 만날 수 있다는 의미"라고 설명했다.
정 장관은 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령의 APEC 회의 계기 방한을 언급하며 "이번 기회를 통해 북미 정상이 다시 만나는 결단을 내려야 한다"고 거듭 강조했다.
그는 "베트남과 미국은 전쟁으로 큰 피해를 입었지만, 1995년 관계 정상화를 이룬 뒤 이를 기반으로 경제 발전에도 성공했다"며 "북한도 북미 간 적대관계를 해소하고 관계 정상화를 통해 베트남의 길을 걸을 수 있기를 희망한다"고 말했다.
또한 정 장관은 럼 베트남 공산당 서기장이 지난 8월 방한한 데 이어, 두 달 만에 북한을 방문해 노동당 창건 80주년 기념 행사에 참석한 사실을 언급하며 베트남의 중재 역할을 높이 평가했다.
그는 "남북 모두와 좋은 관계를 유지하는 나라는 베트남을 포함해 몇 되지 않는다"며 "그만큼 베트남의 역할이 한반도 평화와 안정에 중요하다"고 강조했다.
정 장관은 이날 럼 서기장의 방북을 대대적으로 보도한 북한 노동신문의 PDF 실물 파일을 부호 대사에게 전달하기도 했다. 이에 부호 대사는 "양국 관계를 통해 한반도와 동북아의 평화와 안정이 이뤄지기를 바란다"고 화답했다.

With the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit Week opening in Gyeongju, Unification Minister Chung Dong-young urged the resumption of dialogue between North Korea and the United States.

He said, "Vietnam and the US suffered significant damage from the war, but after normalizing relations in 1995, they achieved economic success based on this." He added, "I hope that North Korea can follow Vietnam's path by resolving the hostilities between the US and the US and normalizing relations."
Minister Chung also praised Vietnam's mediating role, noting that General Secretary of the Vietnamese Communist Party, Lâm, visited South Korea in August and then North Korea two months later to attend the 80th anniversary of the Workers' Party of Korea.
