도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 27일(현지시간) 김정은 북한 국무위원장과의 회동 가능성 관련해 "그(김정은)를 만나면 정말 좋을 것이다. 그가 만나고 싶어한다면"이라고 밝혔다.
일본 '교도 통신' 프랑스 'AFP 통신' 등에 따르면 아시아 순방 중인 트럼프 대통령은 이날 말레이시아 쿠알라룸푸르에서 아세안(ASEAN·동남아시아국가연합) 정상회의 일정을 마치고 일본 도쿄로 향하는 미 대통령 전용기 에어포스 원 기내에서 취재진에게 이같이 전했다.
자신의 2기 행정부 출범 후 말레이시아·일본·한국 등을 차례로 방문하는 아시아 순방 일정을 소화 중인 트럼프 대통령은 경주 APEC(아시아태평양경제협력체) 정상회의 계기로 오는 29∼30일 방한 예정이다.
트럼프 대통령은 이번 아시아 순방에 앞서 경주 APEC을 계기로 김 위원장과의 회동 의지를 밝혀온 가운데 지난 2019년 당시 처럼 깜짝 회동 여부가 주목되고 있다.
앞서 지난 24일(현지시간) 트럼프 대통령은 아시아 순방길 중 미 대통령 전용기 에어포스 원 기내에서 '한국 방문 중 김 위원장과 비무장지대(DMZ)에서 만날 가능성'에 대한 취재진 질의에 "그가 연락한다면 그렇게 하고 싶다. 지난 번(2019년 6월) 그를 만났을 때 내가 한국에 온다는 걸 인터넷에 공개했다"며 "그가 만나고 싶다면 나는 분명히 열려 있다"고 밝힌 바 있다.
