충남 서산시가 63년 만에 두 번째 국보를 탄생시키며 문화도시로서의 위상을 다시 한 번 입증했다. 주인공은 바로 고려시대 석탑의 정수를 간직한 ‘서산 보원사지 오층석탑’이다.
이완섭 서산시장은 30일 보원사지 오층석탑 앞에서 열린 기자회견에서 “1962년 서산 용현리 마애여래삼존상 이후 63년 만에 서산의 두 번째 국보가 탄생했다”며 “시민 모두가 자부심을 느낄 만한 역사적 성취”라고 밝혔다.
문화유산 당국에 따르면, 보원사지 오층석탑은 오는 12월 국보로 승격될 예정이며, 이번 지정은 오랜 기간 이어진 학술 연구와 보존 노력의 결실이다.
보원사지 오층석탑은 백제계 석탑의 단정한 비례미와 신라계 석탑의 조형 감각이 어우러진 고려 전기 대표 석탑으로 평가된다. 특히 기단부에 새겨진 팔부중상은 충청권에서는 유일하게 남아 있는 귀중한 예술적 유산으로, 통일신라에서 고려로 이행되는 시대적 조형 변화를 잘 보여준다.
1968년 해체·보수 과정에서 발견된 사리함과 사리병, 석재 소탑 등은 당시 불교 의식과 석탑 조성 시기를 밝혀주는 중요한 자료로, 현재 국립공주박물관에 전시 중이다.
해당 석탑은 1963년 보물로 지정된 이후, 서산시는 2016년부터 정밀 실측 조사를 실시하고 학술 연구 및 전문가 세미나를 지속적으로 진행했다.
이를 통해 석탑의 역사적·예술적 가치를 재조명했고, 지난해 10월 국가유산청에 국보 승격 신청서를 제출했다. 이후 문화유산심의위원회 심의를 거쳐 30일 국보 지정 예고가 발표됐다.
이완섭 시장은 “서산의 문화유산이 다시 주목받는 계기가 마련됐다”며 “앞으로도 문화유산의 체계적 보존과 세계적 가치 확산에 힘쓰겠다”고 말했다. 이어 “국보 승격 과정에서 적극 지원해 주신 성일종 국회의원께도 감사드린다”고 덧붙였다.
이번 국보 승격으로 서산시는 국보 2점, 보물 21점, 사적 3곳을 보유하게 됐다.
서산시'는 앞으로 개심사 목조아미타여래좌상의 국보 승격과 명종대왕 태실의 유네스코 잠정목록 등재 추진 등을 통해 시민 문화 자긍심을 한층 높인다는 계획이다.
