공단은 경주 본사가 위치한 지역사회의 범죄 예방을 위해 경주경찰서와 자립준비청년 등 사회적 약자를 위한 맞춤형 안전환경 개선에 기여한 공로를 인정받아 사회적약자 보호 분야에서 최우수상을 수상했다.
공단은 2019년 경주여고 학생들을 위한 방범용품 지원과 범죄예방 교육을 시작으로, 2020년에는 유흥시설 밀집지역인 노서동에 조도 개선과 방범시설을 설치했다.
2021~2023년에는 동국대 WISE 캠퍼스를 중심으로 ‘여성안전 안심 캠퍼스타운’을 조성하고 CCTV, LED 보안등, 몰래카메라 단속장비 등을 설치해 체감 안전도를 높였다.
2024년에는 경주 계림초 통학로 일대에 조도개선 솔라안심등 설치 및 노후벽면 환경디자인을 개선하고 경주시 아동지키미와 함께 환경정화활동과 순찰을 실시했다.
2025년부터는 공단의 경주지역 자립준비청년 멘토링 프로그램과 연계해 아동복지시설 성애원 주변인 경주 구정동에 시민과 시설 아동들이 밤길에도 안심하고 이동할 수 있도록 로고젝터, 반사경, 조명벽화, 노면 디자인 등 다양한 범죄예방 환경을 설계했다.
특히 수혜자인 성애원 자립준비청년들이 직접 설계에 참여함으로써 자긍심과 주인의식을 갖게 했으며, 경찰·지자체와 협업으로 지역 내 자발적인 CPTED 참여 모델을 만들었다.
여성안심귀갓길 조성 이후 해당 지역은 범죄신고 건수가 48.8% 감소했고, 동국대 일대 CPTED 시행 만족도는 99.6%, 성범죄는 66.7% 감소했다. 초등학교 인근 환경개선 사업은 5대 범죄율 3.6% 감소, 범죄신고율 14.1% 감소로 이어졌다.
조성돈 한국원자력환경공단 이사장은“앞으로도 공단은 지역사회와 더욱 소통하고 상생․협력해 지역주민과 취약계층이 방사성 폐기물과 범죄로부터 안전한 환경에서 생활할 수 있도록 노력하겠다”고 강조했다.

Korea Radioactive Waste Agency Receives Minister of Gender Equality and Family Award at Crime Prevention Awards
Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORIA) (Chairman Cho Sung-don) announced on the 28th that it received the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Award at the 10th Korea Crime Prevention Awards hosted by the National Police Agency.

In 2019, the agency began providing security equipment and crime prevention training to students at Gyeongju Girls' High School. In 2020, it improved lighting and installed security facilities in Noseo-dong, an area densely populated with entertainment establishments.
From 2021 to 2023, the agency will establish a "Women's Safety and Security Campus Town" centered around Dongguk University's WISE Campus. CCTV, LED security lights, and hidden camera detection equipment will be installed to enhance perceived safety.
In 2024, solar safety lights were installed to improve illumination along the school route to Gyeongju Gyerim Elementary School, and environmental design improvements were made to aging walls. Furthermore, environmental cleanup activities and patrols were conducted in collaboration with the Gyeongju City Child Guardians.
Starting in 2025, in conjunction with the Gyeongju Regional Youth Preparing for Independence mentoring program, various crime prevention measures were designed in Gujeong-dong, Gyeongju, near the Seongaewon Children's Welfare Facility, to ensure that citizens and children in the facility can walk safely at night. These measures included logo projectors, reflectors, illuminated murals, and road design.
Notably, the beneficiaries, the Seongaewon children preparing for independence, directly participated in the design process, fostering a sense of pride and ownership. Collaborating with the police and local governments, the project established a model for voluntary CPTED participation in the region.
Since the creation of the Women's Safe Routes Home, the number of reported crimes in the area has decreased by 48.8%. The Dongguk University area also saw a 99.6% satisfaction rate with CPTED implementation, and a 66.7% decrease in sexual crimes. The environmental improvement project near the elementary school resulted in a 3.6% decrease in the five major crime rates and a 14.1% decrease in the crime reporting rate.
Korea Radioactive Waste Agency Chairman Cho Sung-don emphasized, "Going forward, the agency will continue to communicate and cooperate with the local community to ensure that local residents and vulnerable groups can live in a safe environment free from radioactive waste and crime."
