브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 중국과의 관계에서 협력을 강조하면서도, 인공지능(AI) 칩 분야에서는 한 발도 물러서지 않겠다는 입장을 밝혔다.
트럼프 대통령은 2일(현지시간) 공개된 CBS 방송 ‘60분’ 인터뷰에서 “그저 제압하기보다는 협력함으로써 우리가 더 크고, 좋고, 강해질 수 있다고 생각한다”며 중국과의 협력 필요성을 언급했다. 이 인터뷰는 지난달 31일 사전 녹화된 것이다.
트럼프 대통령은 다만 중국의 미국 전력망 침입, 지식재산권 절취, 농지 매입 등에 대해 “우리도 그들에게는 위협이며, 언급된 많은 일을 우리도 그들에게 한다. 세계는 매우 경쟁적이며, 특히 중국과 미국은 서로를 항상 지켜보고 있다”는 말도 함께 함으로써 상호 경쟁 관계임을 다시한번 상기시켰다.
특히 양국 기술 패권 경쟁의 중심인 AI 칩 분야에 대해서는 단호한 태도를 보였다. 트럼프 대통령은 ‘엔비디아의 최첨단 칩을 중국에 판매하도록 허용할 것이냐’는 질문에 “아니다. 그렇게 하지 않을 것”이라며 “우리는 그들이 엔비디아와 거래할 수 있게 하겠지만, 최첨단 칩은 예외다. 미국 외에는 누구도 갖지 못하게 할 것”이라고 했다.
그는 또 “최첨단 칩을 중국에 넘긴다고 해서 그들이 반드시 이기진 않겠지만, 동등한 이점을 얻게 될 것”이라며 “AI 경쟁은 매우 중요한 사안”이라고 부연했다.
AP통신에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 같은날 플로리다에서 워싱턴으로 복귀하는 에어포스원 기내에서도 “엔비디아 블랙웰 칩을 외국에 넘기지 않겠다”고 재확인했다.
