【브레이크뉴스 대구】진예솔 기자=대구시와 엑스코가 11월 한 달 동안 의학과 공학, 교육, 인문 등 다양한 분야에서 모두 11건의 국제학술대회를 잇따라 개최한다.
이번 행사에는 국내외에서 약 1만750여 명이 참가할 예정이며, 이 중 해외 방문객은 2,000여 명에 이를 것으로 보인다.
대구 곳곳의 컨벤션 시설이 행사장으로 채워지면서, 도심 전체가 글로벌 교류의 장으로 변하고 있는 모습이다.
대부분의 행사는 엑스코를 중심으로 경북대학교, 호텔인터불고대구, 칠곡경북대학교병원 등에서 열린다. 학문과 산업, 문화가 자연스럽게 도심 전반에 연결되면서, 대구가 국제회의 도시로 자리매김하고 있다는 평가가 나오고 있다.

이달 열린 가장 큰 규모의 행사는 지난달 31일부터 이달 2일까지 엑스코에서 개최된 ‘제13차 아시아소동물수의사대회’였다. 세계 4,500여 명이 참가해 최신 임상사례와 연구성과를 공유했으며, 해외 참가자만 1,800여 명에 달했다.
오는 20일부터 22일까지는 칠곡경북대학교병원에서 ‘제13회 아시아 대장암 로봇수술 캠프’가 열린다. 12개국에서 300여 명의 전문가가 참가해 로봇 대장암 수술 분야의 국제 공동 연구와 의료기술 교류가 이어질 예정이다.
반도체, 수학교육, 치료초음파, 물류과학, 시스템엔지니어링 등 다양한 분야의 국제 심포지엄도 줄줄이 예고됐다. 특히 한국마이크로전자패키징학회가 여는 ‘마이크로전자및패키징국제심포지엄’에서는 차세대 반도체 패키징 기술을 중심으로 산업·학계·연구기관 간 협력이 본격화될 전망이다.
이번 국제회의 개최에 따른 경제적 파급효과도 상당할 것으로 기대된다. 한국관광공사는 숙박, 교통, 음식, 관광 소비 등을 포함해 155억 원 규모의 경제효과를 전망했다. 해외 참가자 방문이 단순한 소비를 넘어서 대구 도시 브랜드 가치와 글로벌 네트워크 확장으로 이어질 것이라는 분석도 나온다.
국제회의 유치와 운영을 맡은 엑스코의 역할도 한층 강화됐다. 지난해 8월부터 대구시의 국제회의 전담기구로 지정된 엑스코는, 유치부터 개최까지 원스톱 지원 체계를 구축했다. 공항과 주요 호텔에 웰컴데스크를 운영하고 무료 셔틀버스와 AI 통역 서비스, 숙박 및 투어 예약 시스템 등 ‘참가자 중심 서비스’도 한층 확대하고 있다.
전춘우 엑스코 대표이사는 “대구의 국제행사를 체계적으로 지원해 도시 전체의 마이스(MICE) 경쟁력을 높이고 있다”며, “11월 연이어 열리는 학술대회들이 대구를 글로벌 컨벤션 도시로 한 단계 도약시키는 계기가 될 것”이라고 밝혔다.

Daegu City and EXCO will host a total of 11 international academic conferences in various fields, including medicine, engineering, education, and the humanities, throughout November.

Approximately 4,500 participants from around the world participated, sharing the latest clinical cases and research results, with approximately 1,800 international participants.
From the 20th to the 22nd, the "13th Asia Robotic Colon Cancer Surgery Camp" will be held at Chilgok Kyungpook National University Hospital. Approximately 300 experts from 12 countries will participate, promoting international collaborative research and medical technology exchange in the field of robotic colon cancer surgery.
A series of international symposiums covering diverse fields, including semiconductors, mathematics education, therapeutic ultrasound, logistics science, and systems engineering, are also scheduled. In particular, the "International Symposium on Microelectronics and Packaging," hosted by the Korea Microelectronics Packaging Society, is expected to foster collaboration among industry, academia, and research institutions, focusing on next-generation semiconductor packaging technology.
The economic ripple effect of this international conference is also expected to be significant. The Korea Tourism Organization projects an economic impact of 15.5 billion won, including accommodations, transportation, food, and tourism spending. Some analysts predict that the visits of international participants will go beyond simple consumption and lead to an expansion of Daegu's city brand value and global network.
The role of EXCO, responsible for attracting and operating international conferences, has also been strengthened. Designated as the city's dedicated international conference organization since August of last year, EXCO has established a one-stop support system, from hosting to hosting. It operates welcome desks at the airport and major hotels and is further expanding its "participant-centered services," including free shuttle buses, AI interpretation services, and accommodation and tour reservation systems.
Jeon Chun-woo, CEO of EXCO, stated, "By systematically supporting international events in Daegu, we are enhancing the city's MICE competitiveness. The series of academic conferences held in November will serve as a catalyst for Daegu's advancement as a global convention city."
