도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 5일(현지시간) 뉴욕시장 선거에서 조란 맘다니 민주당 후보가 당선된 것에 대해 "민주당은 이 나라 최대 도시 시장에 공산주의자를 앉혔다"고 밝혔다.
미 'AP 통신'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 지난 2025년 11월 미 대선 승리 1주년을 맞아 플로리다주 마이애미에서 열린 '아메리카 비즈니스 포럼'에서 "민주당이 미국에 어떤 짓을 하고 싶어 하는지 알고 싶으면 그냥 어제 뉴욕시 선거 결과를 보면 된다"며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 "수년 간 경고했듯 우리 적들은 미국을 공산주의 쿠바·사회주의 베네수엘라로 만들기로 작정했다"며 "마이애미는 곧 뉴욕시 공산주의를 피해 달아나는 이들을 위한 피난처가 될 것"이라고 지적했다.
또 "우리는 공산주의·상식 사이에 선택해야 한다"며 "내가 백악관에 있는 한 미국은 어떤 방식·모양·유형으로도 공산화하지 않을 것"이라고 밝혔다.
이어 "지난해 11월 5일 미국인들은 우리 정부·주권을 되찾았다"며 "어젯밤 뉴욕서 주권을 조금 잃었으나 우리가 잘 처리하겠으며 이제 공산주의자가 뉴욕서 어떻게 하는지 보자"고 밝혔다.
더불어 맘다니 당선인이 승리 연설에서 한 도발적 발언 관련해선 "그는 나에게 매우 친절해야 하며 첫발을 잘못 뗐다"며 "맘다니는 매우 위험한 발언을 했고 워싱턴을 좀 존중해야 하며 그러지 않으면 성공할 가능성이 없다"고 했다.
트럼프 대통령은 뉴욕시장 선거 전 맘다니 당선인이 시장이 될 경우 뉴욕시에 대한 연방정부 자금 지원을 제한할 수 있다고 경고한 바 있다.
한편 트럼프 대통령은 이날 워싱톤 DC 백악관에서 열린 공화당 소속 상원의원 초청 조찬에서 "민주당이 초래한 끔찍한 정부 '셧 다운(일시적 업무 정지)' 사태 한가운데 있다"며 "그들은 일본 가미카제 조종사 같으며 필요 시 나라까지 무너뜨릴 것"이라고 강조했다.
