엑스포 아트홀 관장 시절 유키 구라모토 초청공연을 통한 인연으로 처음 뉴에이지 음악을 접하였고 그 후로도 여러 번 내한 공연마다 만나 대화를 통하여 명상음악에 빠져들곤 하였다.
조용한 카페에서 들려오는 피아노 선율, 혹은 비 오는 날 창가에 흐르는 잔잔한 신시사이저의 소리. 우리는 그 음악을 ‘배경음악’이라 부르지만, 사실 그 안에는 뉴에이지(New Age)라는 하나의 시대정신이 흐르고 있었다. 단어 그대로 새로운 시대의 감성이자 내면으로 향하는 음악이다.
뉴에이지 음악은 1970~80년대 서구에서 등장했다. 기계화된 도시 문명, 경쟁과 소비의 일상 속에서 사람들은 외부의 소음이 아닌 자신의 내면의 소리를 찾고자 했다. 이 음악은 화려한 리듬보다 반복과 여백, 정적과 자연의 울림을 통해 사유하는 청각을 열어주었다.
계절의 순환과 인간의 감정을 피아노로 그려냈고, 전자음 속에서 우주적 사색을 펼쳐내기도 하였으며 시간의 덧없음 속에서 인간 존재의 따뜻함을 노래하기도 하였다.
뉴에이지는 단순히 차분한 음악이 아니라 삶의 방향을 잃은 현대인에게 잠시 멈추어 숨 쉬게 하는 시간이었다. 그 고요한 틈에서 진정한 새로움은 언제나 우리 마음 안에서 시작된다는 것을 우리는 깨닫는다.

그 당시 누구나 뉴에이지 음반 하나씩을 가지고 있었고 특히 시크릿 가든(Secret Garden)의 음악은 모두가 사랑하였었다. 노르웨이의 작곡가와 아일랜드의 바이올리니스트로 이루어진 이 듀오는 그들만의 독특하고 서정적인 멜로디로 전 세계인의 마음을 사로잡는 뉴에이지 음악의 상징이 되었다.
아일랜드 출신인 그녀의 바이올린 연주는 켈트 민속 음악의 애잔하면서도 맑은 서정성을 담고 있고 마치 안개가 자욱한 푸른 초원이나 잔잔한 호숫가를 걷는 듯한 기분을 느끼게 해준다. 이 선율은 가사 없이도 마음의 깊은 곳을 건드리는 '칸타빌레(노래하듯이)' 멜로디로 유명하다.

뉴에이지 음악은 하나의 장르이면서도 사실은 ‘악기의 철학’이다. 같은 곡이라도 피아노로 들으면 사색이 되고 기타로 들으면 감정이 되고 바이올린으로 들으면 초월이 된다고 표현한다.
하루의 끝, 고요한 방 안에서 조용히 흘러나오는 피아노 선율. 누군가는 그 곡을 힐링 음악이라 부르고, 또 누군가는 명상이라 말한다.

She portrayed the cycle of seasons and human emotions on the piano, explored cosmic reflections amidst electronic sounds, and sang of the warmth of human existence amidst the transience of time.
New Age wasn't simply calming music; it was a time for modern people, lost in life, to pause and breathe. In that quiet, we realize that true renewal always begins within our hearts.
At the time, everyone owned a New Age album, and the music of Secret Garden was especially beloved. This duo, comprised of a Norwegian composer and an Irish violinist, captivated hearts worldwide with their unique, lyrical melodies, becoming a symbol of New Age music.
