몇 년전 터키 이스탄불 뒷골목의 이라크 난민 여성을 본적 있다. 젖먹이를 안고 바람 안 들어오며 그나마 따뜻한 뒷골목의 한 켠에서 먹고 잔다. 당시 또한 겨울 때인데 비록 이스탄불의 겨울은 영하로 내려가진 않지만 그래도 꽤 쌀쌀한 편이다. 이는 에게 해와 흑해 사이의 보스포루스 해협에서 불어오는 바닷 바람이 차기 때문이다. 이 사람들은 집단 서방과 미국이 석유를 훔치기 위해 전쟁을 일으키고 IS를 발생시켜 나라를 병신으로 만들었다. 이 난민들은 이라크나 시리아 측에서 넘어 온 사람들이다. 이스탄불 뒷골목에는 이런 사람들이 넘쳐난다.
터키 내 난민들 안 받아들이면 집단 서방과 미국이 제재하겠다고 협박하자 경제력이 바닥 상태인데다 미국의 경제 제재까지 받고 있는 터키는 울며겨자 먹기로 난민들을 받아들인 꼬라지가 이것이다. 난민은 서구 놈들이 발생시켜 놓고 터키도 함께 책임을 져야 한다니 터키 입장에서는 억울할만도 하다. 이 난민 여성에게 터키어로 물어보니 터키어는 전혀 모르고 영어도 못한다. 할 줄 아는 영어는 Give me Money, Thank you, I from Iraq 가 전부다. 일단 아랍어로 대화를 시도해봤다. 나도 아랍어는 대학시절 때 공부했고 지금에야 쓸 일이 많이 없어 Speaking은 많이 잊어 먹었지만 Listening 은 가능하다.
이 여성의 남편은 모술에서 미군이 설치한 부비트렙에 걸려 폭사했고 부모님도 티그리스 강 상류에서 떠내려온 지뢰를 밟고 돌아가셨다고 한다. 이 여성은 젖먹이 된 딸, 그리고 이제 4살 된 쌍둥이 딸과 함께 터키 가지안테프에 왔다. 터키 정부가 난민들에게 집을 나눠줬지만 당시 터키 동부 가지안테프 대지진 때 그 집마저 붕괴되고 쌍둥이 딸 하나는 무너진 집 벽에 깔려 죽었다고 한다. 그래서 두 딸과 함께 이스탄불로 와서 젖먹이 딸은 얼마 나오지 않은 모유를 짜서 준다. 시리아와 이라크 난민 420만 명이 살고 있는 터키는 현재 세계에서 가장 많은 난민을 받아들인 국가다.
이들 중 약 10%만이 난민수용소에, 나머지 90%는 자신이 머물 집을 구해 살고 있다. 그런데 터키는 비유럽 국가 출신 난민에게 적용되는 1951년 제네바 난민 협약의 당사국이 아니다. 따라서 터키는 난민들에게 일시적 보호책만 제공하고 있다. 그러나 2016년 1월부터 터키는 노동 시장을 난민들에게 개방하고 있다. 난민들의 노동시장 진입엔 엄격한 제한이 따른다. 특히 기업이 고용할 수 있는 난민의 수를 종업원 수의 10%로 제한했다. 한편 기업은 난민을 고용해도 고용 당국에 고용 사실을 신고할 유인이 없다. 당국에 이를 신고하면 난민에게 최저임금을 지급해야 하고 당국에는 그에 따른 각종 사회 보장 부담금을 내야 하기 때문이다.
이런 것들을 보고도 한국에서는 전쟁을 우습게 여기고 호전성을 가진 자들이 천지다. 전쟁은 이렇게 서러운 것이다. 전쟁을 서든어택 같은 온라인 게임으로만 접한 한국인들은 전쟁의 무서움을 모른다. 전쟁은, 누군가 공격으로만 피해를 입지 않는다. 자연재해도 함께 동반되어 온다. 그것이 인위적이든 자연적이든 어쨌든 온다. 보수우파 노인들 중에서 우리가 중국과 가까운만큼 선제 타격이 가능하다는 꿈에서 나올 헛소리를 하는 자도 있다.
중국과 면해 있는 서해안, 대부분 수도권에 생활권을 두고 있는 우리 국민들은 중국에서 쏘아대는 엄청난 물량의 드론과 미사일 공격을 직접 받아낼 수 있다. 그렇게 되면 우리 국민들이 저와 같은 꼴이 안 된다는 보장은 어디에도 없다. 나이 6~70대나 먹고 호기롭게 헛소리를 하는 자들은 미국이나 일본으로 도망가면서 선동하면 그만이지만 도망갈 형편이 안 되는 국민들은 그대로 당할 수밖에 없다. 그러면 또 이럴 것이다.
"빨갱이들을 잡는 대(大)를 위해 소(小)를 희생하는 것은 필연적이다. 빨갱이 OUT!"
그러면서 큰일을 위해 나와 상관없는 이웃의 목숨을 희생시키는 것은 아무 것도 아닌 것처럼 여긴다. 선동은 나팔수처럼 하고 실제로 실행할 어떠한 액션도 몸만 사리며 입으로는 금방 죽이고 척결할 것처럼 말하는 자들이 그들이다. 그런 자들을 보면 "자유 민주주의"는 입에 달고 다닌다. 그러나 역설적으로 보면 그들만큼 파시즘스럽고. 전체주의화 되어 있는 집단은 없다. 그런 자들이 정치를 하게 되면 히틀러보다 더한 독재를 하게 될 것이다. 정말 우리가 배척해야 할 것은 이와 같은 극단적인 것들이다.

War Refugees and War in Istanbul, Turkey...The Aggression of South Korea's Far-Right Elderly

A few years ago, I saw an Iraqi refugee woman in a back alley in Istanbul, Turkey. She was holding her baby, eating and sleeping in a corner of the alley, sheltered from the wind and somewhat warmer. It was also winter, and while the temperature in Istanbul doesn't drop below freezing, it's still quite chilly. This is due to the cold sea breeze blowing in from the Bosphorus Strait, between the Aegean and Black Seas. These people are the ones who, in an effort to steal oil, the West and the United States waged war and gave rise to ISIS, crippling their country. These refugees came from Iraq and Syria. The back alleys of Istanbul are overflowing with such people.
When the West and the United States threatened sanctions if Turkey refused to accept the refugees, Turkey, already economically devastated and under US economic sanctions, reluctantly accepted the refugees. This is the situation. It's understandably unfair for Turkey to be held responsible for the refugee crisis, even though it was caused by Westerners. When I asked this refugee woman in Turkish, she didn't speak Turkish at all and couldn't speak English. The only English she could speak was "Give me money," "Thank you," and "I'm from Iraq." This woman's husband died in Mosul after being struck by a booby trap set by the US military, and her parents died after stepping on a landmine that drifted upstream from the Tigris River. She came to Gaziantep, Turkey, with her infant daughter and four-year-old twin daughters. The Turkish government provided a home for the refugees, but the earthquake in eastern Turkey at the time destroyed that house, crushing one of her twin daughters to death. So she returned to Istanbul with her two daughters, pumping her breast milk to feed her infant daughter what little she had left. Turkey, home to 4.2 million Syrian and Iraqi refugees, currently hosts the largest number of refugees in the world.
Only about 10% of these individuals reside in refugee camps, while the remaining 90% are living in their own homes. However, Turkey is not a party to the 1951 Geneva Refugee Convention, which applies to refugees from non-European countries. Therefore, Turkey offers only temporary protection to refugees. However, since January 2016, Turkey has opened its labor market to refugees. Refugee access to the labor market is subject to strict restrictions. Specifically, companies are limited to hiring 10% of their workforce. Furthermore, companies have little incentive to report the employment of refugees to the authorities. If they do, they are obligated to pay the minimum wage and pay various social security contributions.
Despite these circumstances, many in South Korea trivialize war and harbor belligerence. This is how tragic war is. Koreans, who only experience war through online games like Sudden Attack, don't understand its horrors. War isn't just about someone being attacked. It's also accompanied by natural disasters. Whether man-made or natural, they're bound to happen. Some elderly conservatives even babble out the nonsense of dreaming about the possibility of a preemptive strike due to our proximity to China.
Our citizens, who live along the west coast bordering China and mostly in the Seoul metropolitan area, will face the brunt of a massive Chinese drone and missile attack. If that happens, there's no guarantee our citizens won't end up like them. Those in their 60s and 70s who are so brazenly rambling can simply flee to the US or Japan and incite others, but those who can't escape will have no choice but to endure the consequences. Then, this is what will happen.
"Sacrificing the small for the greater good of catching the communists is inevitable. Out with the communists!"
Yet, they treat sacrificing the lives of their neighbors, who are not related to them, as if it were nothing for the sake of a greater cause. They are the ones who act like trumpeters in agitation, but are cautious about taking any actual action, and talk as if they will quickly kill and eradicate them. When you look at such people, you see "liberal democracy" constantly on their lips. But paradoxically, no group is as fascist and totalitarian as they are. If such people were to enter politics, they would become dictators worse than Hitler. Truly, we must reject such extremes.
