24일 오후 충주시 평생학습관 1층 종회의실. 60대 주부 이모씨는 스마트폰 화면을 들여다보며 환하게 웃었다. 그가 보고 있는 화면에는 챗GPT가 작성해준 여행 일정표가 떠 있었다.
서원대학교 평생교육진흥본부와 충주시평생학습관이 공동 주최한 이날 'AI 디지털칼리지' 특강에는 20대부터 70대까지 다양한 연령층의 시민들이 참석했다. '누구나 쉬운 AI활용'이라는 제목처럼, 디지털 기기 사용에 서툰 중장년층도 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 구성된 것이 특징이다.
오후 1시 30분부터 4시 30분까지 진행된 교육에서 참가자들은 단순히 듣기만 하는 것이 아니라, 직접 스마트폰과 노트북을 켜고 생성형 AI를 체험했다. "처음에는 걱정했는데, 막상 해보니까 생각보다 어렵지 않더라고요"라는 반응이 대부분이었다.
강의를 맡은 김들풀 서원대 교수는 IT NEWS 대표이자 아스팩미래기술경영연구소 대표로, EBS 창학퀴즈 미래기술 출제위원으로도 활동하고 있는 IT 과학 전문 미래기술 전문가다. 하지만 그의 강의는 전문 용어로 가득 찬 어려운 강의가 아니었다.
"자, 이제 제미나이에게 '제주도 2박 3일 여행 일정 짜줘'라고 말해보세요." 김 교수의 안내에 따라 참가자들이 하나둘 AI와 대화를 시작하자, 강의실은 금세 탄성으로 가득 찼다.
특히 블로그를 운영하는 참가자들에게는 AI를 활용한 글쓰기 실습이 큰 호응을 얻었다. 60대 자영업자 박모씨는 "가게 홍보 블로그를 하는데 매번 글 쓰는 게 힘들었다"며 "오늘 배운 방법으로 하면 훨씬 쉽게 콘텐츠를 만들 수 있을 것 같다"고 말했다.

이번 특강은 기획 단계부터 '디지털 접근성'을 고려했다. 포스터에 QR코드를 넣어 스마트폰으로 간단히 신청할 수 있도록 한 것. "요즘은 어르신들도 QR코드 찍는 건 다들 하시잖아요"라는 주최 측의 설명처럼, 사전 신청부터 디지털 체험의 시작이었다.
이번 교육은 서원대학교와 충주시가 손잡고 만든 결과물이다. 대학이 교육 콘텐츠와 전문 강사를 제공하고, 시가 장소와 홍보를 담당하는 방식으로 역할을 나눴다.
서원대 백종성 수석연구원은 "대학이 지역사회에 기여할 수 있는 가장 확실한 방법이 바로 교육"이라며 "앞으로도 시와 협력해 시민들이 필요로 하는 다양한 교육 프로그램을 선보일 것"이라고 밝혔다.
충주시 평생학습관 하정숙 평생학습과장도 "AI 교육이 특정 세대만의 전유물이 아니라 누구나 배울 수 있다는 것을 보여준 의미 있는 시간이었다"며 "디지털 소외 계층이 없는 충주를 만들기 위해 지속적으로 노력하겠다"고 말했다.
교육이 끝난 후 참가자들은 서로 스마트폰 화면을 보여주며 자신이 만든 AI 작품(?)을 자랑하기 바빴다. 70대 어르신 한 분은 "손주들이 맨날 'AI 시대'라고 하는데 뭔 소린지 몰랐다"며 "이제는 나도 AI 쓸 줄 안다고 말할 수 있을 것 같다"며 뿌듯해했다.
50대 직장인 최모씨는 "회사에서 인공지능을 쓰라고 하는데 막막했다"며 "실무에 바로 적용할 수 있는 팁을 많이 배워서 만족스럽다"고 소감을 전했다.
평생교육 전문가들은 이번 교육이 단순히 AI 기술을 알려주는 것을 넘어, '디지털 포용'의 진정한 의미를 보여줬다고 평가한다. 나이와 직업, 교육 수준에 관계없이 누구나 새로운 기술을 배우고 활용할 수 있도록 돕는 것이야말로 평생교육의 본질이라는 것이다.
충주의 한 평생교육 전문가는 "지역 대학과 지자체가 협력해 실용적인 디지털 교육을 제공하는 충주의 사례는 다른 지역에도 좋은 모델이 될 것"이라고 평가했다.
충주시는 이번 특강의 성공에 힘입어 앞으로도 다양한 디지털 분야의 교육을 정기적으로 운영할 계획이다. "디지털 전환 시대, 충주시민 누구도 뒤처지지 않게 하겠다"는 것이 시의 약속이다.
