KBS 초대 북경 특파원과 런던지국장을 지냈으며 문화 대기자의 길을 걸어온 이동석 님을 인사동 담 레스토랑에서 뵙고 많은 이야기를 나누었다. 아직도 생생히 떠오르는 1984년 백남준의 위성 프로젝트 ‘굿모닝 미스터 오웰’을 통해 비디오 아티스트 백남준을 우리나라에 처음 소개한 장본인이다.
1987년에는 국산 자동차로 북미 대륙 2만 km를 4개월 동안 달려 9편의 KBS 문명 다큐멘터리 ‘세계를 달린다’를 제작하였으며 1989년 국내 최초로 중국 실크로드를 답사하여 심층적 프로그램을 선보였다. 나아가 작곡가 윤이상, 화가 이응로, 그리고 한국 현대미술의 아이콘 이우환을 현지에서 심층 인터뷰했던 문화 전문기자로 한 시대를 관통한 면모가 분명하였다.
2017년 9월 대한민국 방송 90주년 기념식에서 방송문화 발전 공로로 은관문화훈장을 받은 우리 방송 문화사에 굵직한 족적을 남긴 문화대기자의 내공이 고스란하였다.
서로가 치열하게 긴 시간 쏟아 놓은 이웃 나라 일본 가수 미야코 하루미 이야기 속에 나 또한, 입력하고 갈무리해야 할 소중한 이야기가 많았다. 이어 올 연말 무렵에 서로의 관점에서 글을 쓰고 많은 이야기를 품고 있을 가수를 만나보기로 하였다.
한참 동안 이야기에 빠져 있던 나는 밀쳐두었던 핸드폰에서 멈춰 선 메시지를 발견했다. 원로 영화배우 김지미 선생님이 별세하셨다는 소식이었다.

향년 85세. 2002년 미국으로 이주해 LA 인근 패서디나에서 지내오시다가, 자택에서 현지 시각 7일 아침 조용히 영면하셨다. 김지미 선생님과 가장 가까이 지내온 지인 선생님께 연락을 드려 주요한 상황을 들었다. 고인의 뜻에 따라 현지 장례는 가족장으로 거행될 예정됐다.
패서디나 정착 또한 지인 Sookie 선생님의 권유에서 비롯된 것으로 알고 있다. 그 후 20여 년 동안 거의 날마다 함께하며 김지미 선생님의 곁을 지켜온 분이다. 병원 퇴원 후 비교적 건강하시던 선생님이 갑작스레 떠난 충격을, “인명은 재천”이라는 떨린 목소리로 추스르고 있었다.
아시아의 은막을 빛내던 김지미 선생은 주변의 지인들과도 깊은 인연을 가지고 있다. 선배 김홍배 선생의 어머니인 별칭 ‘항아리 장’ 여사는 우리나라 연예사에 바람처럼 스쳐 간 전설적 인물이었다.
장 여사는 홍콩 쇼브라더스의 거목 런런 쇼(Run Run Shaw)와도 깊은 친분이 있었으며 그 인연 위에서 김지미 선생이 1969년 제15회 아시아태평양영화제에서 ‘너의 이름은 여자’로 한국 배우 최초의 여우주연상을 받았을 때 영화제 참가에서부터 막후 지원까지 아끼지 않았던 분이다.
월남전 참전 시기 한국 최초의 위문단 단장을 맡을 만큼 시대의 중심을 살았던 장 여사를 김지미 선생은 맏언니처럼 여겼다. 어린 김홍배 선배를 정릉의 집으로 데려가 재웠을 만큼 두 분의 관계는 돈독하였다. 전화에서 선배는 인간이 겪어야 하는 불가피한 슬픔을 먹먹한 음성으로 견디고 있었다.

오래전 한글 서예가 청농 문관효 선생님께 부탁해 김지미 선생님의 건승을 기원하며 전해드렸던 휘호 ‘함께하는 삶’이 오늘따라 더욱 아리게 다가온다. 김지미 선생님을 늘 챙기시며 근황을 전해주신 사진의 최근 모습을 조용히 바라본다.

I met Lee Dong-seok, KBS's first Beijing correspondent and London bureau chief, and a longtime cultural reporter, at Dam Restaurant in Insadong, and had a long conversation. He was the first person to introduce video artist Nam June Paik to Korea through Paik's satellite project "Good Morning Mr. Orwell" in 1984, a memory that still lingers vividly.
In 1987, he drove 20,000 kilometers across North America in a domestically produced automobile for four months, producing the nine-part KBS documentary "Running the World." In 1989, he became the first Korean to explore China's Silk Road, presenting an in-depth program. Furthermore, as a culture reporter who conducted in-depth interviews with composer Yun Isang, painter Lee Ungno, and Korean modern art icon Lee Ufan, his presence clearly transcended an era.
At the 90th anniversary of Korean broadcasting in September 2017, he received the Silver Crown Order of Cultural Merit for his contributions to the advancement of broadcasting culture, demonstrating his profound expertise as a cultural reporter who left a significant mark on the history of Korean broadcasting.
